1929–1968; American clergyman and civil rights leader. He led the boycott (1955–56) by Montgomery blacks against the segregated city bus lines, and he attained national prominence by advocating a policy of passive resistance to segregation. He organized the massive March on Washington (August 28, 1963), which brought more than 200,000 people together to hear his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Not to take anything away from the honors due to Dr. King, but he didn't "organize the massive March on Washington (August 28, 1963)" - Bayard Rustin did:

BTW, I don't believe the fact that Dr. King was beginning to address the economic exploitation of all working people regardless of race was coincidental to his being murdered. As we've seen in recent years, the oligarchy doesn't mind including black people in their schemes as long as those people don't threaten their right to privilege.

Over-hyped. He gets a national holiday?

No one else but the man who officially discovered our nation gets that respect.

That's a little unbalanced, IMO. I'm white and don't beat women though, maybe I just don't see why no one knows the bad stuff about this guy.

From what I read in history, Dr. King was a decent person who defended the rights of the people. He is definitely a person to be admired.

Combined the literary revolutionary spirit of Henry David Thoreau, the peaceful resistance of Gandhi, and the theological/philosophical tendencies of Paul Tillich to form one of our lasting American figures of the 20th century. . .I don't think people quite understand the theological and philosophical depth of King. . .the guy had a Ph.D. from Boston U. and was usually the smartest guy in the room. . .

Civil disobedience didn't start with MLK, although he and those around him honed it to an art. What do you call the Boston Tea Party?

A bold man who only wanted everyone to live together in a crazy world. It's a shame that I think he would be disappointed with people today. Not only those that oppose what he stood for, but those that use his memory and bastardize his words for their own gain.

Unlike todays self proclamied minority leaders, MLK put other people first. A true leader and inspiration for generations to follow.

There is no question that Martin Luther King Jr. was very instrumental in advancing the cause for Civil Rights. Through his eloquent speech and insistance on nonviolence, King was able to inspire an entire generation of Americans to devote themselves to the Civil Rights movement. King believed deeply in equal rights and justice for ALL Americans, and he fought for that cause until the end. While he was a flawed man, he fought deeply for a cause he believed to be right and ultimately died for that cause.

unfortunately nobody has been able to replace his leadership. his last speech indicated that he knew he was going to die confirmed how much he was willing to sacrifice for his cause. it still gives me chills.

Dr. King died in the effort to try and convince everyone in America that we are all created equal, and for that reason alone he deserves the utmost respect...regardless of his personal life....

This is a no-brainer. Mere words cannot express this man's impact and as far dedication goes, the man gave his life for civil rights. Very important.
