Harry S. Truman 5

Integrated the armed forces.Tried to do right by blacks.Succeeded the most bigoted, vile, narrow minded racist dirtbag of a president,so anything Harry S did was an improvement.

Truman was all right. At least he stayed out of the way. But the only reason he integrated the military was the fact that A. Philip Randolph (who should be on this list) threatened a March on Washington.

Unfortunately, Truman was not successful in getting any Civil Rights legislation through Congress, although he made it clear that he felt it was necessary. However, the integration of the military was a courageous move considering the political climate of the country at the time, and shows that as President Truman was more interested in doing what he believed to be right rather than was was necessarily popular.

He insisted that integrating the military was the right thing to do. That says it all in my book.
