If I want to expand knowledge on a subject, I watch the Discovery Channel or visit my local library.

As I've said before, I always learn something new when I come here, but my decision to visit and peruse this site isn't based gaining knowledge. You have exhibit some caution and use some common sense when reading anything. Especially internet opinion websites.

Like anywhere, there are some frauds here on RIA, but there are also many others that truly seek to challenge others intellectually. When this happens, it could be fairly stated that our knowledge has indeed increased. Coming on to RIA has helped hone in my writing skills and it even serves as a forum where I can develop my own ideas by communicating them. I only hope that they're accessable to everyone, I believe that even the most dense topic can be made clear through effective communication in the final analysis.

Nah, my knowledge hasn't really been expanded on this site. The only things I've learnt during my time here is to take a stand on those racist creeps or the prejudiced reviewers who choose to rate my or other people's reviews poorly and not even have the guts to show themselves.

Oh sure, anytime I want to learn who the hottie actors are, or the biggest jerks on the current incarnation of Survivor, or which Pokemon can asskick which Digimon, or which illiterate analyst thinks George Bush/Bill Clinton/Rush Limbaugh/Michael Moore is the antichrist, this is the first place I come.

Depends. My knowledge about GW Bush is not going to be expanded by some 16 year old kid talking about how he's a terrorist, the devil, a war monger, and an asshole. I find that less than half the comments here will actually expand one's knowledge. There are plenty of people who will write a one-word sucks opinion about this or that, and you have to wade thru alot of that to get to the meaty comments.

Of course, one must formulate their own opinions rather than take the opinions of others as fact, but it certainly doesn't hurt to read what another person thinks, and, perhaps even find out something you didn't know about a topic. Even more, writing about various topics encourages me to look up more on the topic for facts to back up my arguments (example: did you know that the sai, regarded as a weapon, was originally a farming tool from Okinawa from the 1600's? I didn't know that until I looked it up to write my bit on The Mummy Returns. Useless trivia, perhaps, but interesting nonetheless). Not the reason I come here, but a nice side effect.
