 | VirileVagabond (37) 05/10/2005 | There simply is and has never been another band like Pink Floyd. The band's work can be somewhat categorized in three periods, namely the Syd Barrett influenced era, the fully produced Roger Waters era, and the post Waters era. Probably the best way to sample the psychedelic Barrett era is via the compilation Relics (1971), though it doesn't include the single One of These Days. The more modern Waters era began with an unforgettable bang with Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and ended with a whimper with the forgettable The Final Cut (1983). Along the way are the remaining Pink Floyd essentials Wish You Were Here (1975), one of my favorites Animals (1977), and the grandiose The Wall (1979). As these releases are so strong and conceptual, no compilation will suffice for anyone even marginally interested in the band. The problem with Pink Floyd is that their music is not generally accessible for casual listeners, making the band somewhat of a niche group and, therefore, difficult to rate as great.

 | JagDeepView (0) 04/30/2004 | ...all that has been said over past decades and all that would be said in future about Pink Floyd is immaterial, for here is a band whose music with its timeless quality has taken on a life of its own, the exact nature of which is beyond written/verbal expression. Right from early experimentation (Syd Barret era) to melodic expression of Water's complex ideas along with that dreamlike state of trance that Gilmour's guitar riffs induce -- the effect has always been mesmeric. An immensely original creative genious, and arguably, one of the best Art/Classic/Prgressive/Psychedelic/Experimental 'rock' bands of all times - though PF music defies the boundaries of being included in any particular genre as such. It is heartening to notice that music that is so artistically superior has been able to capture the popular fancy for more than quarter of a century and has been a gigantic and deserving commercial success as well, without being restricted to a few whimsical intellectuals. PF, and the concept that it is, is a treat to musical and aesthetic brains, and will remain so for a very long time.

 | kolby1973 (33) 04/05/2004 | A band that is much like their overly played music...a big melancholy mess that should have long been put to pasture...

 | Byrdiohead (1) 01/11/2004 | I would be a shame not to mention this group on the best bands list. A more mind-blowing band you will not find anywhere. They're dark and often scary, but always excellent. Pink Floyd has given rise to the more experimental side of rock and for that they shall be commended. Pink Floyd is the thinking man's rock band, they never stick to conventional song structure and always deliver something new and exciting.

 | scarletfeather (54) 01/10/2004 | I have never understood the cult of adoration surrounding this band. Their music seems designed to cater to maudlin drunks or suicidal, homicidal, adolescents.
