As others have said, they appear better than they are because of the other acts who were concurrent with them.

 | edt4 (115) 06/14/2007 | I would sorta have to concur with TheHappySinner666 on this one. Like him-- I didn't hate them, I also didn't find them particularly interesting or engaging. True, they were one of the better popular bands of the 1980's, but the vast majority of popular music in the 1980's was abysmal. They had one, possibly 2, songs that I'll listen to if they come on the radio now while I'm driving, but just about everything else from their catalogue I turn off.

 | TheHappySinner666 (5) 06/14/2007 | I don't hate this group, but I will never understand all the gushing over Chrissie Hynde's mediocre voice, and most of this bands mediocre songs! Yeah, they were pretty good at one time, and compared to the outright CRAP that passes for rock and pop music today they sound like legends, but still never more than middle tier stuff in the end.

 | FranksWildYears (60) 05/29/2006 | The great classisists of the New Wave era, Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman Scott made new music that reminded us of what was beautiful about Rock and Roll, a marriage of great melody and beat.

 | Birse (0) 05/16/2006 | Chrissie Hynde has one of my favourite female voices of all time. Most of the Pretenders' stuff is very good.

 | SZinHonshu (45) 07/27/2005 | A group of musicians with a marginal sound. They always needed a new lead singer but never got one.

 | Jed1000 (74) 01/11/2004 | One of the best bands from the New Wave/Punk era. Chrissie Hynde's is one of the classic female voices of the rock era. And 'My City Was Gone' is one of the best songs ever written.
