 | operator 409 (7) 11/16/2005 | The greatest American rock and roll band. Cannot get in to enough what these guys symbolize, as musicians and as men. Great commercial success in the early to mid-eighties with some terrific tunes, but true Top fans know the real deal was pre-Eliminator and post-Recycler, (although as I mentioned, Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler were very tasty efforts, and sold a ton of copies). As Billy likes to say, 'same 3 guys, same 3 chords'. Something for every rock music fan, from the folks that came on board in '83, to the hard core, devoted long time fans. Have been backstage and met the Tres Hombres on several occassions. Nice fellas. To me, as legendary as ZZ Top is in my mind, their sound is more like the voice of a beloved family member, at least to MY ears. The recording hiatus between Tejas and Deguello coincided with my high school years, so having the Top as my favorite band during that time was tough, although there was still a lot of great music out there in spite of the disco heyday. They returned with a vengeance, and to this day , I am happy to proclaim ZZ Top as my favorite all time band.

 | traderboy (26) 03/10/2005 | Playable and oh-so-smooth, these guys were nearly untouchable in their heyday. The videos were repetitive, and they suffered from media overexposure. The early stuff (ELIMINATOR on back) remains timeless and vibrant, as only Joe Walsh can hold a candle to Billy Gibbons on slide guitar. Some of the best driving music available.

 | VirileVagabond (38) 07/02/2004 | I must admit that I have never appreciated ZZ Top as much as the band probably deserves. Hard rock is supposed to sound a bit distorted at times, but this band wasn't really a hard rock band. They were (are I suppose) a blues/southern rock band; however, there were some pre-Eliminator moments (eg Tush, La Grange, Cheap Sunglasses, and Pearl Necklace), but even then I was mostly uninspired. Adding insult to injury, for Eliminator (1983) the band went Hollywood and added synths and sequencers to satisfy the new I want my MTV generation. The result was some immortal party, Big 80's classics (eg Gimme All Your Lovin' and Legs), but the long-term damage had been done (though Got Me Under Pressure was one of their better tracks). To the band's credit, they didn't settle for performance style videos (ie standing and playing while the camera rolled as so many older school rockers did on early videos); instead the group developed a good concept and took it all the way to a rather large bank. The bottom line is that ZZ Top's fame and reputation was a result of their most commercial efforts as opposed to their most worthy.

 | zztopboi (0) 04/29/2004 | zz top has been around forever playing blue-rock no one has ever produced in 35 years of rock and roll. One of the best rock bands ever and still going.
