Probably the last time that Elton John and his band sounded like they were having fun. They would have been at the top of the world in 1972, on a roll after a handfull of successfull albums and concerts but not yet weighed down by the burdens of topping themselves or delivering the expected numbers for the record company. After this song and album Elton John's work started to have a forced commercial appeal that played well for with the record buying public for at least another 4 years, but doesn't stand the test of time as well as the music from the early days.

Honky Cat leads off the full-length Honky Chateau (1972) with a fun, upbeat, rolling, old school boogie number that is generally considered one of Elton John's most popular and recognizable tracks. This song really highlights Elton's prowess on the piano even more than usual. All Honky Cats should know that the song charted in the U.S. for 7 weeks in 1972, peaking at #8.
