Philadelphia Freedom was Elton Johns's ode to Billy Jean King and her team, the Philadelphia Freedoms. The song was also timely for the United States' 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. Released originally as a single, the track is now included as a bonus track on the CD version of Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975). With its Philly Soul undertones, the track has been covered by artists associated with that sound, including Hall & Oates, MFSB, and Ike & Tina Turner. Philadelphia Freedom charted in the U.S. for 17 weeks in 1975, peaking at #1 for 2 of those weeks.
