I used to like John Cougar Mellencamp when he was popular. "Pink Houses" and his music in general was not too hard and not too soft. It was just right. I think he was very talented.

The one good thing about Cougar Piss and his sub- Springsteen prairie warblings for red state kids is that his 80's records, which were very commercially successful and bought in droves by mid Americans, kept The Children of the Corn from being a work of non- fiction...

Irritating, pretentious shite.
I really like the people who don't listen closely to the lyrics and assume its a patriotic ode. I know of one GOP candidate for congress who used to play it as his rallies, thinking that it was a "hip" version of "God Bless America." He got his ass deservedly whipped, thankfully.

So self-consciously populist it makes you want to turn elitist.

If it were any more bland he would have fallen asleep while singing it.

Ain't that America!!! Good song. Reagan reportedly wanted to use this song for his reelection campaign but Mellencamp told him to stick it. Actually, the song sounds like it belongs in a car commercial, and probably has been in several.
