Fronted by an amazing voice and great riff driven guitar songs, they had the great fortune of two stellar songwriters in Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, both of whom brought elements of jazz and folk to their hardrock foundation. Like many great bands that are fuelled by a musical partnership, tension between the two leaders resulted in great art, but also tore the band apart at its peak. Cummings carried on for several albums fronting a highly competant outfit that produced some great music, but the band's best years were well behind them when he left for a solo career.

I thought it was laughable when Tricia Nixon invited them to play at the White House, not realizing that American Woman was a song with a very strong anti-U.S. bent. I wonder how Tricky Dick felt when he heard them going on about American war machines and ghetto schemes.
