Oh yeah it was a trend, just like ,most music out there. There were a few bands who did it well. Thats the way it always is. If you pay atention enough, you will see that that there is always an original sound, and then all the copiers of it. Of those a great few will be great bands who stand the test of time. Nowadays that group is becoming more and more rare. There has even been a few called great that truelly sucked. The 60-70's bore most great bands, after that its been fads. When america moved away from roots rock (blues influenced rock, zepplin, The stones, Aerosmith) They broke the mold for great timeless music.

grunge is the best type of music its passionate, energetic, and mostly HONEST

A great era of modern rock. Original bands who didn't care one bit about the mainstream (even though they evetually became it). A lot of my favorite music comes from this time.

Where did it go...I miss it.
