The Buffalo Snooze seems to be the only major newspaper serving a metropolitan area of over 1 million people (Buffalo-Niagara Falls) that has no real competition. There used to be The Courier-Express, but unfortunately it folded in 1982. The paper tends to be a bit biased in its reporting, but to its credit, it allows for a wide array of opinions to be read in its op-ed section. International news is pretty good, local coverage is excellent (though it tends to gloss over the shenanigans that local pols get themselves into). Sports amount to the Bills, Sabres, and precious little else. The Buffalo Bisons are one of Triple-A's success stories and they're relegated to the back page. Same goes for NASCAR, soccer, fly fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking, running, and so forth. My wife and I subscribe only to the Sunday edition because we can always read what's happening online. The local music scene is covered fairly well also, with much emphasis placed upon local bands and groups/people that have scored well in recent years, such as the Goo Goo Dolls and Ani DiFranco. Recently the News added The Wall Street Journal to its business section and have included separate sections for PCs/technology, childrens'/young adult issues, health and wellness, and has expanded its travel section to include local getaways for a very reasonable cost. All told, the Buffalo Snooze is decent, but it's not something I read every day. I prefer the NY Times, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Boston Globe, etc.
