I suppose that this should be banned in many of our public schools these days. In those places books are used merely as weapons.

Given some of the grammar and spelling I see on this and other web-sites, you'd think this book and all other's like it were already banned.

You mean it isn't banned now? Someone better go tell the educators.

who actually takes offense to a dictionary?? that is just too ridiculous.

This makes no sense. They banned the dictionary because it contained a number of objectionable words. A dictionary is supposed to contain all of the words. It's not as if children are going to use this as a resource to learn naughty words, and if they do then at least they will learn the proper meanings of the words so they can use them properly. Also, slang is another facet of the evolution of our language, and should not be supressed. Slang may be the grunt of a human hog with an audible memory (Bierce) but any word in common usage should be included in a current dictionary because such books need to chronicle the evolution of the language, no matter what sort of abuse we subject it to. Banning the dictionary is unimpeachable evidence that having a working brain is not a prerequisite for prospective school board members. The same people probably banned National Geographic magazine for its smutty photos of half-naked tribal women. I guess education isn't necessarily a priority for the educators. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It seems strange that a dictionary would be banned but this one was banned in Eldon, MO in 1978 for containing 89 objectionable words. In 1987 the Anchorage school board banned it for including slang definitions for various words.
