"They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist..." (General John Sedgwick, battle of Spotsylvania, 1864)

Union general. He was hit by a Confederate sharpshooter as he stood on a hilltop with his staff, immediately prior to the battle of Spotsylvania Court House (May 9, 1864)

This indicates the general level of prudence and judgment demonstrated by our military "leadership" since the founding of the republic.  This is the type of hubris that led, a century later, to the disaster in Korea, the disaster in Viet Nam and those numerous other minor blunders committed by that ultimate drain on the U.S. taxpayer, the good ol' Pentagon.

Unfortunately for him, the rebs were good sharpshooters, and the elephants stayed home that day.

Spotsylvania was a terrible bloody conflict in a terrible war. At a place called Bloody Angle, the opposing forces stabbed at each other through a log embrasure while the bodies piled up.
