 | cyclee (18) 05/14/2008 | I don't believe that all are created equally, so why should all be treated equally. For example, I think my husband should do all the lifting when we move, and I'll put in my little effort into packing.
If we're actually talking about equality between races, I do believe we will get closer and closer to that but won't be anytime too soon.

 | irishgit (138) 05/14/2008 | In theory this is great, but it does not entirely hold water faced with the vagaries of existance. The world is not a lab controlled experiment, and one's youthful and idealistic belief in universal equality starts to take a bit of a beating as one gets a little older.
All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

 | Automatt (30) 05/13/2008 | People aren't born equal. Our bodies and minds have different traits and characteristics, and we're born into different situations. But the law should treat everyone equally.

 | FranksWildYears (48) 05/13/2008 | When you were a kid and you were pouring more than one glass of chocolate milk, for yourself and your siblings you really tried hard to make all the glasses as equal as possible, but someone always felt that their glass was slightly lower than the others. My point is that it is an ideal that is noble and worth pursuing, but rarely acheived in the absolute. But so long as we continue to pursue it, over a life time we should all end up getting the same amount of chocolate milk.

 | Randyman (103) 05/13/2008 | Of course I believe in equality. I consider myself the equal of anyone. That does not equate to the belief that I can everything that everyone else can. We all have our own sterngth. Whether someone else considers me an equal or not is their problem not mine.

 | lmorovan (12) 05/13/2008 | We are all created equal, so yes, I believe in equality. We however are specialists in destroying it and use it for our selfish and wicked purposes. So, there is no equality anywhere in the world.

 | abichara (60) 11/27/2006 | There's no such thing as equality in this world, and governments shouldn't pursue total equality as an ends. The question comes down to value. What are people willing to pay for a product that an individual produces? This is a question of economic utility, what do people want to pay for your product in the market, before the exchange occurs. Value is a matter of what something is really worth according to what is socially determined in the marketplace. Merit or a subjective determination that you deserve to get paid "x" amount of money for your services isn't the correct way to run an economy; for this is something that isn't socially known, and therefore impossible to determine.
When you try to pursue equality, you end up with market distortions that don't reflect people's real needs. But there’s something more key than that at play here; any economy that's based on such extreme egalitarianism cannot be based on liberty, for people will be channeled into certain tasks where individuals or leaders will be making subjective judgments of moral values.
Just to use an illustration: some might say that it’s unfair that a baseball player gets paid more than a nurse because the work a nurse does is more valuable to society. But the thing is that society sees the ball player's work is far more lucrative than a nurse’s work; that’s why he gets paid more. Some may not see it as fair necessarily, but certainly a central planner does not have the ability to determine the value of labor in the market, for doing that would require this person to know everything about how society works--people’s desires, needs and motivations. Indeed, most central planners probably wouldn't know much about what their own motivations! No one person can know everything they need to know about how to determine value in the market because that is well beyond individual comprehension. That would be like playing God in an economic sense! The market doesn't work as a collective, but rather as an assemblage of each individual needs. Value is something that cannot be socially determined, thus making total equality impossibility.
Certainly equality of opportunity should be encouraged. Funding for education, research, economic development is critical to develop a strong society. But forcing equality simply doesn't work, for it will create a culture of mediocrity. People need something to work for, and everyone has their own motivations that are measured differently according to society. You can't impose an alien value system on people and expect that they will adopt it: that has been the ultimate downfall of economic systems that try to impose egalitarianism on its people.

 | LastMessenger3 (40) 11/27/2006 | I personally do, but it doesn't mean that there's an equality in this world. Many people feel like they are bigger than a person next to them. As long as there is a power, control, and prejudice, we won't find a total peace.

 | cutegurl (15) 05/25/2005 | Here's my problem with equality. All men are not equal. Do I believe that they are created equal, sure. Do I believe all men deserve equal opprotunity, absoultely. But do I believe all men are equal, no, because they are not. Some men have worked harder and become better, therefore they are superior through their own actions and efforts. In their becoming superior our pretty ideal of equality is ruined. The Founding Fathers never said men are equal, they said men are created equal. There is quite a large difference there. So really, do I believe that all men are equal, no. Do I believe in equality, no.

 | texasyankee (21) 05/25/2005 | Of course some people aren't equal in certain jobs. Some people have more to offer than others. But some people are better in some things, than in others. Everyone has something to offer to the world. Doesn't make anyone better than anyone else, even though some people might think it does. Some things that are of benefit some people don't even realize are a benefit, because it's something that can't be cashed in on, and unfortunately in this world everything is based on power or money.

 | randomoscity (3) 05/24/2005 | The problem with equality is that it compromises human competitive instinct. You can't be happy with equality, so it can only exist for so long.

 | dpostoskie (7) 05/04/2005 | I wish, it's gotten better but there will always be issues. People are afraid and lash out at things they feel uncomfortable about. What the hell is wrong with gay people getting officially married? How does it hurt anyone else? It's not like marriage hasn't been devalued if that's what you're worried about.

 | JonTheMan (27) 12/08/2003 | Morally so to speak I do not believe in equality or inherent superiority as all humans are different and thus should be treated differently. What's important is creating a community in which no-one feels exploited or mistreated. We are not all the same and yet we are not completely incompatible, much like pieces of a puzzle. We should all try to fit into that puzzle regardless of whether someone else has more or less jigs then us.

 | louiethe20th (74) 12/07/2003 | I don't believe in equality as long as there are The Jesse Jacksons and the NAACP and the ACLU and the racial quotas and the college preferences to minorities!!! Earn your keep by your qualifications and not skin color! Isn't that what King said,Content of character and not color of skin? I don't think minorities really want that, they love to be put first and handed everything!!!

 | Enkidu (37) 11/12/2003 | All enlightened societies hold equality as an ideal to be attained--and I believe this is good--but it is fundamentally a violation of nature. In nature, no two beings are equal, our pretty rhetoric about being created equal aside. The way the conflict between the ideal and the reality plays out is the story of civilization.
