The Google Deskbar is a free software download available at www.google.com that allows PC users to display Google search in their Windows taskbar. The Google Deskbar effectively breaks Google out of the confines of the browser, and makes it appear that Google Web Search is integrated into the operating system. The Google Deskbar allows users to run Google searches even without having a browser open. (Add picture)

The Google Deskbar is more of a political statement to MSN that Google won't roll over and die like Netscape did than an actually useful tool. As a user, is a deskbar really that more convenient than going to www.google.com? And it's definitely not more convenient than the tool bar which puts Google search in your browser. I find this feature very un-Google like in that it puts grandstanding and showmanship (ie, message to Microsoft), ahead of what's useful for its users. I'd rather see them throw some resources at making their more practical tools available to Mac users as opposed to launching the irrelevant Deskbar.
