He was great in Monty Python. I don't get into his films (a little too dark).

While he's gone downhill in recent years, Gilliam deserves recognition for his lifetime accomplishement: he worked on Monty Python, one of the funniest TV shows ever; directed the Python movies, all of them fantastic; post-Python, Gilliam directed Time Bandits, a neglected classic (it was marketed as a 'kids movie' in the US). He went on to make Brazil (still my favorite movie of all time) and later, his better-know hits 12 Monkeys and The Fisher King (Now with 'big-time' American stars-I was impressed at the performances he got from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, who I had assumed were 2nd and 3rd-rate Hollywood actors from their earlier formulaic roles). The most impressive thing about Gilliam is how he bridges the gap between 'actor' directors and 'machine' directors; he is as interested in the actors as with the writing, the special effects, even the backgrounds and costumes! (Looking for La Mancha, a documentary about Gilliam's aborted movie on Don Quixote, is very interesting in this regard). One of the all-time greats.

As far as visual content and cutting edge story telling, there is no one out there better. Many directors eventually elect to go the safe route, but when Terry reached that stage, the route became chaotic and full of obstacles. A genius.

Although he is usually best remembered for Monty Python, 'the Fisher King' or '12 Monkeys' are his finest works. He has an honest eye for the absurd and knows how to make it both entertaining and intellectual.

Most people think Terry Gilliam is British, but he was actually born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 22, 1940 and didn't move to the United Kingdom until 1967; nevertheless, Gilliam's philosophy and quirkiness (at least from an American perspective) is clearly representative of his adoptive homeland. While I understand why Gilliam's films would not appeal to everyone, most of his work has an organic fell and atmosphere which is illustrated by his work with Monty Python as well as the movies "Time Bandits" (1981), "Brazil" (1985), and "12 Monkeys" (1995). Not one of the best directors overall, but Terry Gilliam is certainly one of the best movie directors in his niche.

Fantastically out of this world. He's taken his skills and genius that he showed as a Python and taken it to a higher level. 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' is very surreal and is very amazing. I found it very easy and pleasurable to watch. As for '12 Monkeys' Wow! Fantastic plot and acting to boot. I love his use of camerawork and photography. I hope he carries on directing these type of films and enthralling us even more.

His movies are atypical, but unimmitibly human! He has the ability to create wildly fantastic scenes that tell truths about reality. From the unbridled fantasy of "Time Bandits" and "The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen" to the bitter irony of "The Fisher king" and "Twelve Monkeys", Gilliam skillfully creates his own world which envelopes the viewer.
