Born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany, Martin Luther dealt the symbolic blow that began the Reformation when he nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Church. By his position that personal salvation was attainable by belief in the gospel instead of having papal intermediaries, Martin Luther became unwilling critic of the Catholic Church. Martin Luther died in Eisleben, February 18, 1546.
