ItemImageBorn on August 18, 1587 on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, Virginia Dare was the first child born of English parents in the Americas. The granddaughter of Governor John White, Virginia Dare disappeared along with the remaining lost colonists. Virginia Dare's location and date of death remains a mystery to this day.

For American historians, the mystery of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, North Carolina remains interesting. Virginia Dare was the first child born of English parents in the New World, and she disappeared along with the other colonists. Some legends say that she and/or the other colonists survived and eventually married within a Native American tribe, and some uncommon features among the nearby tribes (eg light colored eyes) seem to suggest this. It would be interesting to ask if she ever knew her actual ancestry.
