"Lord, help my poor soul!" (Edgar Allan Poe, 1849) 3

Interesting last words for someone I regard as the most over-rated writer in American literature.

"Lord, help my poor soul!" Poe must've had a futuristic vision of Hillary Clinton's naked ass or something.

Poor Edgar. A sad, frustrated life produced one of the greatest writing talents ever. No one has ever been able to replicate his style, although countless writers have tried. Some of his stories, like the Black Cat, seem amazingly dark and nihilistic to me, especially considering the time and society in which they were written. Most accounts assert he died as a result of alcoholism, but there is a revisionist theory out there that he was bitten by a rabid raccoon. His picturesque grave, as well as that of the frail doomed wife (and cousin) who served as the inspiration for many of his best stories and poems, is a Baltimore landmark.
