They needed one 15-20 years ago. At this point the money is so big I don't know if a cap would do much good. They do need to do something because the combination of huge amounts of money and huge egos sure aren't helping the sport.

A salary cap would solve part of the problem, but not all of it. Some MLB owners are cheap pricks who would vote for a salary cap then still not spend anywhere near the cap. These cocksuckers need to realize (as does most of the country) that greed is going to turn the US into a third world nation before the 22nd Century. What does it truly matter if you have 150 million dollars as opposed to 200 million dollars? I can see big market teams getting upset by this (LA, Boston, NY, Chicago), but it would be for the good of the game. Maybe a progressive salary cap might be acceptable. The aforementioned larger markets could have a slight payroll advantage but c'mon a pissant city like Pittsburgh (no offense) is never going to have a chance against a major market like NY without some type of parity. Teams and fans shouldn't have to suffer because of the size of the market they follow and/or reside in.

Best product of the major North American sports?NFL- no guaranteed contracts and a salary cap.Worst product?NBA - soft cap and guaranteed contracts (has killed the quality of play)MLB? Contracts and a lack of salary cap (plus a joke of a steroid policy) threatens to make things worse.

If yo have the money, you should be able to spend it on whoeve you want.

Wow, the top payroll is almost ten times what the lowest one is. The numbers make me want to throw things...

With the top teams paying their players 8 times the bottom teams, how can you have a competitive league? This is almost a Harlem Globetrotters / Washington Generals situation. To market is as a competitive sporting event is a real stretch. Click through for the 2007 payrolls for each team.

The Players' Union needs to realize that parity increases interest in baseball and helps them make more money.

a pipe dream. i find it disheartening to spend the season rooting more for the Yankees to lose than my own team to win.

Cause it's so much fun to watch the Yankees take all the free agents off the market every year. Baseball is not a sport, its a business.

I hate the Yankees, but it would be just as easy for other owners to do what they are doing. I do wish there was a way to prevent this, but you cannot just blame the Yankees. I other owners would open up and spend more money they could be just as successful as The Boss.

A salary cap AND a salary minimum is what is really needed. Who cares if they cap the spending at 60 mil and then the Brewers spend 30? It will help to even things out but not solve the problem completely.

The Yankees control the league because they have the money

I don't care what players make. I'm not jealous of their salaries and I played to a relatively high level.
