Alcohol 2

Other than a cup of wine two or three times a week with the meal, I hardly drink anything else. Oh, well, an occasional cold beer in a hot summer day.

This is not so bad. I have been drinking for 50 years. I had a friend whose grandfather died at age 98. All the neighbors stated that drinking killed him!

I'd rate alcohol as second of all the additions listed. The 1st, and I'm surprised it is not here, CIGARETTES! Never had the habit myself, but have had friends who have been quiting forever. It must be hard...

Instead of going down the list I will just tell you about a friend of mine who has a highly addictive personality. She is a wonderful compassionate and loyal person but because of her unhappiness I believe this is what causes her addictions. Which are, drinks to much, but is always trying to quit, but can't sleep when she doesn't have a couple of big glasses of wine. She gambles every week. And she also wins a lot and loses a lot so I think it comes out pretty even. She shops every day of her life when she isn't at the casino. She thinks I'm a bore (sort of) because I hate shopping, I hate gambling because I always lose and I don't like to get drunk. The price I pay the next day isn't worth it. I love my margaritas but I refuse to drink every day and I sure could.

As a younger man I drank too much. At the age of 26 I decided it was time to quit. It was not an easy task by any means, but well worth it. I have not touched a drop of alcohol since December 2, 1988. I missed it a lot for the 1st year. But I no longer even think of it. Any drug addiction is terrible. The very word addiction in and of itself says it all. I'm just glad to be sober and glad that when I did drink I was a happy person. I never became violent when I drank. As a matter of fact, I can't even understand how some one can indulge in a substance that makes the unhappy. Alcohol brought me great joy...but I paid a very high price when it came time to quit. All in all, I have no regrets. I've become a much more compassionate person as a result of my alcoholism.

Well, it's bad. . .it's destructive. . .but I love it for its honesty. .. you can either handle booze or you can't. . .there is no in-between and in a strange way I appreciate how obvious this is. . .

I think of it as the worst drug around, in part because it's so readily available and because it tends to be validated by the culture. I grew up around people who drank; it was a rite of passage, then a social activity amongst friends and family, then an escape from the realities of life. Its destroyed or is destroying the lives of friends and family in my own circle. My biological father pretty much killed himself via cigarettes and booze; a man of much promise and potential dead at 50 years of age. What's the answer? I wish I knew. Prohibition, of course, isn't going to work; history has taught us that. Maybe there is no clear-cut answer in a society that purports to be so "free." Still, it bothers me when politicians and puritans rail on about marijuana and cocaine and heroin, and neglect to mention the most devastating and pernicious, and perfectly legal, drug available to mankind...

If you want the pattern for someone who is addicted to alcohol is going through, read Proverbs 23:29-35. They not only sometimes get strange thoughts, they hurt themselves because they feel they are indestructible because they can't feel pain as much and they just want more. This is a bad addiction because it not only kills off brain cells, it causes liver and kidney damage and can eventually kill you. It also hurts others around you as the person having the addiction may be violent or extremely lustful and may do things such as rape. And even if they are not violent, it always hurts to watch someone you love slowly kill themselves and waste thier money. Alcohol is expensive, it is an expensive addiction which could cost you far more then money in the end.

Alcoholism is one of the most insidious addictions. It causes more death, crime and violence than illegal drugs.I do not believe in prohibition, but people should be aware that just because it is legal to drink-it does not mean it's harmless.

A beer every once in awhile is ok, but done too often it may lead to violence against other people, vomiting, impared judgement, and if you are driving a car, death or a serious accident.

Alcohol is a very bad addiction. I know someone who died of cirrhosis of the liver and it is a slow, painful and bloody death. Having a drink every once in a while isn't bad for you, but when you get addicted, it can lead you down a path that you don't want to go down. Publlic drunkness is also at issue here; you don't want to end up making a fool of yourself and losing out on life.

I agree this is a very bad addiction. I've seen many succumb to alchoholism. My aunt's a perfect example. This woman crashes parties, harasses her own nieces and nephews, swears at complete strangers, demands everyone call her Old Auntie, hallucinates people abusing her, and even tells lies all the time! Sometimes, She'll pass out or strip down to nude and run through her neighborhood. Oh,yeah. She hits people too. And I've seen her hit on very young girls. (Barely above the age of 12, mind you.) My aunt is living proof that alchohol can destroy you!

Yeah, this is a pretty bad addiction to have. It'll kill you faster than most drugs even, and will cause brain and liver damage, stomach ulcers, the shakes, and all manners of bad health problems. It is made worse by the easy availability of liquor, and the social aspect of it. In a lot of ways it is harder to kick than heroin or cocaine. The DT's are no picnic either, with paranoia, shakes, even hallucinations afflicting you. But you usually only get delerium tremens if you've been on a binge for like a week or two and then abruptly stop drinking. I have lost a few relatives to alcohol, and I know I could do with drinking less. It is so much fun though. I think it can be a good thing in moderation, or even in excess (as long as it's not every weekend) but once it starts to interfere with your normal functioning it's definitely time to stop, or at least back right off.

Alcohol is a destructive, negative beverage that does no one any good. If you are addicted to it, your brain cells are destroyed daily, your self-control goes out the window and no one wants to be around you.

I don't drink except once and a blue moon I'll have 1 or 2 socially. It doesn't appeal to me. I know alcoholism can destroy homes and families. It is a disease. This country seems to be hypocritical when it comes to alcohol, hard drugs and cigarettes. Alcohol can be just as addicting and destructive. However it's not place to go into detail on the subject I'm not an expert I'm not a drinker and I did not grow up around it.
