Kaczynski, who was a former math professor, plead guilty to a string of attacks going back into the 1970's that injured 30 people and killed three. His bombings were referred to as experiments in his journal--when he killed or injured a person, he referred to it as a success. In 1996 he was finally found in a rustic Montana cabin, where he lived the life of a hermit, subsisting on roasted squirrel. Here was the question in the case: is this man truly mentally insane? Despite his erratic lifestyle and strange outlook and apparent suicide attempt, a judge found him to be calm and understanding of the legal charges he faces. He is intelligent and clear thinking, but also somewhat crazy. Indeed he knew what he was doing at the time of the crime, which distinguishes him from other cases where the insanity defense could be utilized. Definitely a very odd case.
