Given that the local crime waves tended to consist of who stole Aunt Bea's cookies, it wasn't like he was overworked.

Andy Taylor (played by Andy Griffith) was the epitome of the small town lawman. Andy's biggest challenges were keeping civility in Mayberry, acting as the Justice of the Peace, and controlling the incompetent Deputy Barney Fife. As Barney was the real crime fighter in Mayberry (and the only lawman in town with a gun unless Floyd or Gomer were sworn in temporarily), Andy must lose a star to Barney's stellar five. The Andy Griffith Show was originally broadcast from 1960 to 1968.
