don knotts is truly a great comedian. barney fife was the humor and andy taylor was the serious one. it was a perfect balance

I was never amused by this wacky and brainless cop. If I called 911, he'd be the last cop I would want to come to my rescue.

Funny as it seems, he's the standard by which members of law enforcement are judged.

Good for laughs, but not one of the best cops out there.

Few television characters were as well developed than Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife (played by Don Knotts) on The Andy Griffith Show. Good-hearted, suspicious and jumpy, Barney was also hopelessly inept chasing down jaywalkers, moonshiners and imaginary bank robbers. Of course being a man in uniform, Barney was the consummate ladies man in Mayberry with both Thelma Lou and Juanita down at the diner vying for his affections. The Andy Griffith Show was originally broadcast from 1960 to 1968; however, Knotts quit the show as a regular cast member in 1965.
