Dana Scully 4

I don't think the writers of the show intended for her to be the better agent, at least not in the first half of the episodes. She was originally assigned to the X-Files because with her medical and scientific background her job was to try to medically or scientifically disprove Mulder's paranormal explanations for X-Files cases. Once Mulder was able to convince her that the answers were not going to be found using traditional methods she teamed up and worked well with him, sometimes saving his life in the process as she put all of the pieces and the clues together. She and Mulder had good chemistry and even when they were on opposite sides of an approach they still watched each other's back. My hat is off to Gillian Anderson for not allowing the success of the show to affect her ego and demand that the writer's put Scully in a different light. When David Duchovny left the series and others were brought in to fill various roles it was as if half of the show was missing because Scully no longer had the intellectual comeptition to see who would be correct in finding the answers. Although the chemistry later improved between Ms. Anderson and the new actors it ended up that instead of the show consisting of one believer and one cynic, we saw instead 2 half cynics who didn't want to believe the explanation they were finding but the evidence was overpowering their doubts. You could see that all of the actors including Ms. Gillian were uncomfortable in their roles. The show was able to recover a very small percentage of quality again but it was too little too late. The writing had suffered and some embarrassing episodes had aired which added salt to the wound of Duchovny's absence. Scully and Mulder were excellent together, each playing their perspective parts but when Duchovny left the series it was as good as over. It's a shame that the producers didn't see what the public saw right away and end the series on a high note.
