 | VirileVagabond (38) 11/29/2003 | James Taylor is the epitome of the singer/songwriter of the 1970's (or any decade) and is clearly one of the most commercially successful. The son of academic parents, Taylor spent his youth in Chapel Hill, NC, Massachusetts, and New York City before getting his first major recording contract in England; however, the record went nowhere until he returned to the United States and released the full-length Sweet Baby James in 1970. The (of course) rest is history. Taylor married and collaborated with fellow singer/songwriter Carly Simon through the 1970's, kicked his heroin addiction, and released some of his most notable singles, including Carolina In My Mind, Fire and Rain, Mexico, Your Smiling Face, and Her Town Too. While this list of singles is impressive, oddly enough Taylor was particularly successful with acoustic, folk covers of songs such as How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and You've Got A Friend, and Everyday. James Taylor was born on March 12, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts, and he and Simon divorced in 1983.
