hey i got a 1997 350 wolverine utility it runs great looks great anybody know anything i can do add to the engine to help it with speed and climbing power?
kmckenzie 02/22/2008
I own a 2004 wolverine and a 2008 wolverine I really love the wolverine as a whole. I would really like to see yamaha give more options for this bike. I would probably by a third one if the new ones came with the manual transmission
widgeon 11/11/2007
I own a wolverine and the only thing i would recommend would be 424 unlocker for it. The unlocker makes the wolvy a power sliding freak! Not to mention a slightly tighter turning radius for hauling loads and backing trailers.
GOLFISH 10/02/2007
I've owned my 97 Wolvy for 9 years and have had nothin but great experience with it. the Warn winch has been a lifesaver just a couple times, otherwise it doesn't have to be tugged out. I have outfitted it with Amsoil motor and gear oils, filters too. Those will greatly extend the life of the machine far into the future. I have ran into a problem as of late though. The machine has no climbing power. I noticed this on the Idaho elk hunt last year. I took it in to the shop and the y checked it out, set the valves and said all was good. Getting out on the deer hunt this week I found that the thing is still gutless up hills with the motor running smoothly but not seeming to kick into the power band. You guys are the first resource that I am relying on for help. could it be a bad power reed? Does it even have one. I love this machine and must get it back into top form! What do you think?
wolverineblood 06/28/2007
I have a 1997 Yamaha Wolverine it has factory size Swamp fox tires highly recomended 2 stage cam big bore kit and ported intake. This machine will go places I will not walk up and go through red and gray clay mudd over the 23" tires. in my opinion it is the best made machine I have ever ridden A frend of mine has an 2006 grizzley 660 and it is top heavy and will not go where I go But it is a utility not a sport utility I rate a Wolverine a 5 here just because there is not ten stars. I love it and was wondering if the new ones were top heavy and apt to rool like the grizzley if you have a 06 or 07 drop me a line at charlesminney@appalachianpiping.com I would love to here from ya if your from usa and from West Virginia drop me a line and we will go on a ride.

I got the kids a 2006 wolverine for Christmas, I loved it so much, I had to get myself one. I got the 06' wolverine 450 4X4 on command. I love this bike. Still need to do some upgrades. Top end is only 53 mph. Great on trails, swamp, and hills. I will get a chance to ride with other bikes this weekend. Well see how it compares to other brands. Great bike.

i bought a 1995 wolverine in febuary that was n bad shape, i gave $3500 for it, it was honestly held together with duct tape!.....its motor was blew up and the front fenders were cracked to pieces because the guys wife got mad and took a baseball bat to it, it didnt have back fenders, it had no brakes, the bars were bent, and the left rear tire was bald to the extreme!!!....it was missing the carb and muffler along with the left headlight and the front driveshaft was bent preventing the michine from moving...well i bought the quad and took it to my bilding and called dennis kirk[atv mag] and ordered a complete set of black plastic and some ITP wheels and a big set of mudlites, i also orders a liftkit that added 1' of lift, insted of buying a driveshaft i got a WARN 424 select[which is awsome for wheelies] [now the atv rolled]. i also added a pro circuit pipe along with powermadd handguards, and racks, tag handgrips, handelbars and some knockout stickers, i put on new brakes and a manual clutch[on the bars], next i added a battery and a cheap carb then i added gas and started it up[it smoked like fire due to there being a awful oil leak draining the oil]it made a clicking noise and i turned it off, i ripped the motor out and sent it to my neighbor "big D" and he took it apart and added new pistons and rings along with a hotcam camshaft and a edelbrock carb with a moose jet kit, he added an EPI clutch kit send it home!...i was now ready to re-install the motor and i noticed i lost the bolts so i welded it in...i now wanted 2 test it out so i started it up and rode it to the local gas station and on my way back it stopped moving!!, the rear differential locked up, now when i buy a new diff.i should be ready to ride it again.

i have always wanted to own a yamaha wolverine 350 since the fist time i layed my eyes on one. so in 2005 i went out and bought one. the wolverine in my opinion is the greatest atv ever built because you get best of both worlds. it is by far has the best 350cc engine out there. the wolverines powerplant is strong and reliable. i can honestly say that iv'e never got my wolverine stuck or went up any hill that i couldn't handle. i have made a few upgrade to my wolvy over the last few months. iv'e added a warn 2-wheel drive selector (which i reccomend to all wolverine owners), a k&n air filter, dynojets, a jardine exaust, 25' powerking mudcat tires mounted on supergrip rims, and a highlifter clutch kit. and im getting ready to put bigger pistons and hot cams in it as well. i have out run all the other local 4x4 quads and can keep up or beat any brute force or grizzly in the hills or trails. i would reccomend eveyone at least try out a wolverine i garuntee you will want one afterwords. "go anywhere and have fun doing it"

hello all i have had mine for about 2 weeks and im not impressed at all i was told that this bike was awsome i use to have a honda 250x stock and was told this would keep up with it so i bought it it wont pull itself up hills let alone another quad and my son pulled up beside me on his honda recon i was in 5th gear and he was in 2nd he hit 3rd and 4th and 5th and left me standing there i use to leave him standing there ive taken it to the shop and they say thats how its supose to run that it a very small bike and its four wheel drive? im confused on how it should run ?it would be nice to keep up with a recon and it would be nice to be able to pull a hill more then 1st gear all the way up...:(

2003 Wolverine with 25" Mudlites, Unlocker setup for front axle, jetted to 150, k&n filter, DMC Alien pipe, skid plates, snorkel setup. You have to love a bike that is fast enough to play with the sport bikes, Muds with the big boys, and is the best all around trail ATV I have been around. Yes it could use more power and top end speed but rarely is it an issue. I trail ride with large groups and have seldom seen any four wheeler that will do everything this one will do. The big utility machines are a little faster and will mud a little better with big tires, but I run off and leave them on tight trails because they are so big and heavy. If we happen to run across some nice jumps they fall even farther behind. The sport bikes are obviously quicker but the second we hit even a small mudhole they fall behind. If you are thinking about what to buy the "old" style Wolverine is the way to go. I rode a brand new 450 Wolverine and was not impressed. Besides the way it felt sitting on it, seat to handlebar relationship seemed very unusual it didn't have any more power than mine and felt alot heavier. This past summer I entered a competition for the first time and placed 2nd overall and mine was the smallest displacement machine in the competition. There were 6 different events 2 different obstacle courses, a barrel race, a mud bog slalom run, and 2 different trail races. The guy that beat me had competed every year since they started and knew exactly what to expect. During one of the trail races I somehow managed to shut off the fuel selector which cost me 1st place overall. The mighty Wolverine is hard to beat as long as the fuel is turned on! I the 4 years I have owned, racking up hundreds of HARD miles the only failure has been a left front CV axle and it was really my fault. One set of brake pads front and rear and many oil changes round out the list of maintenance items. Get one and you will not be sorry.

hey, wolverineyeh108 wolverine isnt the only sport quad with 4wd. The polaris scrambler does too.

I was a professional bike mechanic for several years, and always hated quads. I did, however, always say that if I ever HAD to own a quad it would be a Wolverine. Now one BAD street bike accident and 7 knee-surgeries later...I own an '05 Wolverine. Yeah, the cold-blooded problem they've had from the beginning is still there (probably from having a smaller carb than a Warrior), but other than that this is one grade "A" bike! I test rode an '06 Wolverine before deciding, and frankly it left me a little confused. The new one has more power,a better top end, but more trouble getting it to the ground and noticeably more weight. Ride one and then the other and you should see what I mean. I put a Warn 424 disconnect on it, and a White Bros. E2 pipe. While not exactly fast, this bike does have quite a bit of spunk in stock trim, and is quite easy to handle at speed on the trail, especially with the front axle disconnected! I haven't tried the pipe yet, but it sounds good. My only complaint about the bike is that it's a bit flat up top.(five speed...bah!) Just a touch more speed on the top end and I'd have given this bike a 5 star review. I have a few modifications in mind to try and increase power, and I'll let you know what I find out!

But anyway it still rulz over all the hondas b/c my friend has a 2004 rincon 600 and it can get through some but mine kicks his tell.

I got the wolverine for christmas in 2001.I drove that wolverine as if it were stolen....daily. Jump it, roll it,sink it spin it.It didnt matter. Id only let off the throttle long enough for the animals to get out of the way...of course there was that one time that rabbit.....ya know. I must say, im hard on vehicles, and a wolverine suited me jsut. Great suspension, great handling, Yamaha's got the go to go where no honda could dream of goin. Good job Yamaha! YEHAA!!!!
crazyman420 02/11/2006
BRANDON I got my wolverine in 2002 at christmas time. Daily I would drive that bike just like I STOLE IT EVERY SINGLE time.... I jumped it never let off the throttle for 1 min... just enough to let the animals get out of my way I mean it that bike is the best for suspension handling looks it's got the go to go where a honda won't.

excellent bike
maracaloco 12/18/2005
in my opinion this is the best bike ever. Like all yamahas this is very reliable and starts first push of the button. Has enough torque for work and hauling stuff. also has the horse power for the speed and racing
artcloud 12/14/2005
Great quad, some bad, mostly goods though. Start with the bad: No Clutch, Only 4x4 no 4x2, Low throttle respond at low rpm, no included trailer hitch (not a huge deal for me, but nice when you need it). Now for the goods: Awesome Gearing, Shaft Driven (basically indestructable), awesome response at mid-high rpm, lots of power, sporty design and feel compared to other utility quads, doesn't come with the rear rack installed (this is a plus to me because I already have an 04' Big Bear which i use for all my grunt work and hauling). I got my 05' Wolverine yesterday when I found out that the 06's no longer have shifters, and I think that is totally aweful (also why I bought the Big Bear 400, the last full utility quad with a shifter and 4x4/4x2). I got the Warn 424 4x4/4x2 selector installed at the dealer because of all the good things said about it, and I can defintaly agree so much with everyone else, it makes the machine totally different in 4x2 mode. I plan on putting on a K&N and aftermarket pipe, most likely Big Gun becasue I head good things and their color scheme matches the best. If you have either a pipe or K&N let me know how well they work for low-end torque. I'm back again to comment on winter riding. I have to disaggree with one of the previous comments about coldstarting. I have had absolutely NO problem this winter yet starting below freezing and I'm still yet to change the summer weight oil 20w40... There is an excellent plus to this machine that the choke is directly on the carbuerator, no need to worry about the cable getting rusty and stretch after years of use. I do have to say though I've had my machine in once under the 6 mo. warrenty though for carbuerator work, I didn't ask the details but they said a spring had gotten stuck somewhere inside, the machine was missing like crazy and fouling spark plugs minutes after starting. One day in the shop and it was back like new again, maybe with more power than the day I bought it...still without a doubt a five star machine.

i have a 03 yamaha wolverine. This quad is a great quad. It is the only sport quad with 4 wd. It is pretty good in snow and great for hill climbing. What i suggest though is getting the 4x2 warn select and the 375 or 400 bore kit. I have the 375 bore kit with the warn select. I burned a 250ex and tied a supped up 300ex and yamaha blaster. This quad is pretty fast considering it weighs 477. I really do recommend this quad. Also remember honda sucks!!!!!
pete68 11/16/2005
This has got to be the best bike ever and the ratings show it too.
tono86 11/16/2005
The Yamaha Wolverine is one bad a** bike. It is the original sport utility atv. In my opinion the best atv made. The yamaha 350 is very powerful for its size it can tow a great load. It is also very fast I can smoke all my friends on mine. The best thing is its a yamaha, yamaha is known to last forever. My 1986 yamaha moto 4 which is riding on its 8th set of tires and i figure over 150,000 miles still starts up and runs with no problems.
WolverineMan05 03/25/2005
Just 3 days ago I purchased an '05 Wolverine and so far I love it! So far it is stock except for the Warn 424 Select that I installed. The ablility to turn off 4x4 is priceless. (Or about $250 if you wanna be technical) It rides like a sport quad but if you need the extra traction that I utility provides you just flip a switch. Fenders do like to bathe you in mud and water, but hey, its just dirt. As far as performance goes, it flies for only having a 350cc engine. It will beat a 500 Rubicon off the start and hang in very well top-end. Traction is very good, even in 2 wheel drive. Bottom line: The Wolverine is a great quad for someone who is looking to have fun in the woods and not have to worry about trying to lift a 600lb quad out of a mud hole when you get it stuck. Im sure it's just fine stock, but the addition of the 424 Select makes a HUGE difference.
Pat Trick 02/18/2005
'99 Wolverine Complaints first: 1. No pull or kickstart backup. I've yet to need it, but dread the day I do. 2. Fenders are of poor design. I'm getting the aftermarket exstension real soon. I do alot of hunting and I always have mud slung all over my barrel and bow cams when taking it easy in the back country. 3. Very cold natured. The Good Stuff Bad A-- Ride. I had a Warrior in my younger days and the Wolverine does everything and more. I new when they first came out I had to have one. Everyone I ride with owns Honda Utes. No disrespect to Hondas ( i,ve owned them too) but wont see anyone grabbing my front racks and pulling me to the top of the hill!!! If you can't decide between a sport quad and a utility, this is the quad to have. All the speed and response of a sport and the toughness of a 4x4 utility. No need to get long winded ^ I give it a thumbs up with a few hangups (like no stock hitch) RIDE ON!!!!!!!
berg1947 02/09/2005
Great quad. I have had mine for 6 months now and love it. The only complaint I have is that it has been in the shop twice for the same problem. It acts like the choke is still on, or the governor is kicking in at very low speeds. Competition Accessories has told me two different stories as to what was wrong with it. A 2/wd 4/wd select would be nice for trail riding. Other than that it has been nothing but great. It will hold its own with most of the stock quads I ride with, a mix of sports and utilities. I have had to pull my friends blaster out of about 12 of THICK BLACK mud and it never even thought twice about it, and that was only the back wheels pulling, the fron ones were in the air spinning. I just ordered a Moose 1700lb winch for it and cannot wait to see what all I can pull. If you are looking for a utility quad that is going to handle and feel like a sport than this is the one for you.

Great all around bike. I bought mine new in 2001 and have had no problems since I drove it out of the showroom. I ride with friends with the big boys , 660's and 700's and never get left behind. The first thing you need to do after you get a Wolverine is to get the Warn unlocker. It allows you to swap to 2 or 4 wheel drive. It isnt cheap. You can find them online for about $250 or you can get them through your local yamaha dealer for about $325. They are fairly easy to install with no special tools needed. The cost is high but the reward is well worth it. Its basicly like getting another bike for 300 bucks. When and if mine ever dies I'll got straight to the Yamaha shop and buy another one!
Kyro 09/06/2004
I love my wolverine. I needed something capable of hualing and going with the big dogs and I got it. I like to go fast though and I got that in the wolverine too. Fast as heck and strong as a bear. The best quad ever!
MidnightRider 08/27/2004
Overall an excellent ATV. I am quite happy with my purchase of it. There are a few problems that should be of note. 1. Extremely cold natured ATV. Terribly hard to get it started in the wintertime. I think alot of Yamahas have this problem. However once it is warmed up it runs great. 2. The choke lever! Horrible place for it. What was Yamaha thinking by not running a cable up to the handlebars. I mean, they have been putting the choke lever on the handlebars of ATVs for years, so why doesn't the Wolverine get one there. It would make it so much easier to use. My dad's 1985 Big Red has the choke lever on the handlebars, so what gives Yamaha? This I find to be a major annoyance. 3. Mud protection is very subpar. You will easily be coated with mud in no time. Now you might say that is a good thing, but have you ever ridden through a cow pasture? Manure is not something you want to be covered in! They do make extensions that you can buy and put on the fenders, but I think that should have been something standard. 4. The hitch cost extra. Not necessarily a bad thing. Most people might not need one. 5. It doesn't take well to sitting for some time. It has a tendancy to not tolerate the freshest of gas. I am not sure if that is just mine or if it is a problem overall. Once again in comparison, my dad's Big Red can sit with the same gas forever and then start right up and run great when needed. If you ride the Wolverine alot then this won't be a problem. However for me, I don't get to ride as often as I would like. These things are minor when compared to the overall quality of the Wolverine. Very sporty, 4x4, excellent trail machine, and quite a capable work horse. Not so large as to make it cumbersome, but not so small as to make it underpowered. Very nice compromise. I, for one, find that making bigger and badder ATVs isn't necessarily a good thing. So the Wolverine is an exactly choice for someone wanting some power, speed, and ability, but not wanting an ATV that ends up slightly smaller than a Jeep!
w_tirey 05/06/2004
Superb handling in the trails, awesome acceleration and top speed. This is an incredible bike with 4x4 capabilites, but the heart and soul of a sport quad.
