He is a masterful writer with a fine grasp of narrative, and he explains the terrors of battle in a very crisp manner.
Using battles a few miles and several centuries apart (Agincourt, Waterloo, the Somme) he shows the terror and the workmanship of battle for the men in the line.

 | Enkidu (38) 01/27/2004 | A detailed, precise study of three battles (Agincourt, Waterloo and the First Battle of the Somme). I can't think of any book that attempts to answer the question of what was it LIKE to be there, in such a methodical way. Brilliant.
