Forget the stats- Elway carried some truly mediocre Broncos teams through the playoffs. Looking back, he might be a touch underrated considering the current love-fest given to Favre and attention paid to Brady's injury. Elway has numbers, championship play, and memorable games and performances. . .and Denver can be a tough place to QB. Has to be a five on this list.

One of the best

Elway was the most talented QB ever in my book. I get the feeling that some people who dont rate him very high are people who are too young to have seen him in his prime and are just looking at his stats. Until 1993 he was not in a "QB friendly" system with Dan Reeves. His numbers got better from 93 on. Then there is this "choker" garbage: I hate to tell you this, but those Bronco teams would have never made it to ANY of those 5 Super Bowls if not for Elway. 2 of the 3 teams his Broncos lost to were 2 of the best Super Bowl teams ever. (86 Giants, 89 49ers) Also, don't give me this "Davis carried the Broncos in Elway's last 2 years" crap either. They had Pro-Bowl caliber players almost everywhere on that offense. Let's not forget that Mike Shanahan has proven time and time again that he can plug almost any decent back into that zone blocking system of his and make them look great. After Elway retired, Davis was averaging a whopping 3.1 yards a carry in the '99 season BEFORE he hurt his knee. Why? Because the defense didnt have to worry about #7 passing anymore. Denver has had running back after running back come in and look great for them since Davis retired. How has their QB situation been since Elway retired? How many playoff games have they won since Elway retired? I dont think they have won 1!! Yeah, Elway was a real loser wasn't he?

He was good, but lets be honest, Terrell Davis won those two Superbowls...

John Elway is the most over-rated garbage bag in NFL history. I'm absolutely convinced that Elway sucked off every commentator of his era in exchange for excusing him as the largest choke-artist in NFL history. He never won anything before Terrell Davis arrived in Denver. John Elway can lick my left nut. I can name 457 quarterbacks for whom Elway isn't qualified to lick their jocks after they've worn them for an entire season without washing. Elway was a star in a number of gay porn movies however, earning top honors for taking no less than three dicks in his ass at the same time. He also won honorable mention for best rim-job. I hope Elway dies of ass-cancer. God Bless, The Reverend Jerry Falwell

A tough guy, a leader, great under pressure, could run, had a great arm and he was fearless.

I live in Cleveland: it is my civic duty to hate John Elway, 'nuff said!

I hate to say it but as time goes on I wonder how well 'Joe Cool' would have done in Denver and how ridiculous Elway would have been with Rice and Craig. He more than just about anyone on this list did more with less for so long. those early Denver Super Bowl Teams were aweful without him. I don't like to admit it because I hate the Broncos, but give old horse face his due.

i love favre but john has done more with less.

How this guy is rated so low is beyond me. In his prime he was a true dual threat quarterback, he was a very underrated runner. This guy is probably the most beloved icon in the state of Colorado today and if he ran for governor he'd likely win by a landslide (and he'd easily be the smartest celeb governor in American history). He won more bowls in the professional level than in the college level - in his 4 years at Stanford he never went to a bowl game, but had The Play not occurred in December 1982 the Cardinal would have gone bowling.

Taking everything into account you would be hard pressed to argue John Elway isn't the greatest QB ever. He's right behind Marino in passing yards with over 51,000 total yards. He completed over 4000 passes and through for over 300 TDs. He took his team to FIVE Superbowls winning 2 back to back. His late game heroics are things of legend. As the total package I think I would have to give him the nod as the best ever.

If he had never done anything else but The Drive in Cleveland, he would deserve four stars. But with everything else....
stallion550 04/05/2004
He had all of those amazing comebacks, but could not win the big one by himself. He had one of the strongest arms in football

Great player, I'll forgive him for being a cry baby because he did come to play on Sundays.
zuchinibut 02/20/2004
Elway lead the Broncos to 2 championships and 4 Superbowls. What more can you ask from a quarterback?
Rainbow Rod 02/19/2004
This one man held the team together, even when the broncos sucked! (life long fan)! His stats are great ! His come from behind wins(the most)! 4 superbowls, with back 2back wins, league mvp's, superbowl mvp, best arm, leadership 2nd to none!! what else can I say...He's the man!
jgls 01/08/2004
definitely one of the top 5 of all time. could beat you with his arm, his legs, or his heart.
pabob 01/07/2004
During his career, he was the best. Certainly is one of the top five, if not top three, QB's of all-time. I love how he left the game while still a great player and champion. It doesn't get any better than that.
ellis 12/18/2003
Almost won three titles on his own and still won two!
