He was a leading man throughout most of his career, most notably as a gangster in movies with Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney, but as he aged he evolved into a charactor actor or maybe more correctly, a secondary lead. Whatever, he was one of our great actors.

I'm taking off a star because I think calling him a character actor is diminishing him. A very talented actor who is far more that his best know See, you rats... stuff.
