"Beau Geste", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "High Noon", "Pride of the Yankees", "Sgt. York". All good films. We will have to forgive him for "The Fountainhead".

Sgt. York, For Whom the Bell Tolls, High Noon, etc. He probably is the American classic!

Old 'Coop looks better than ever these days. Time only makes him look better and makes current day A list actors look like Z grade performers in a nursery school pagent.

One of the great aw-shucks actors of Hollywood's Golden Era, a pioneer of the talkies who's shelf life extended past the decline and disapearance of the studio system, a most adept performer who handled both comic and dramatic roles with aplomb. The first 25 years of this guy's career were marked by one fine performance after another, but the last ten years were marked by a reduced number of meaty roles. Did a fine job in Ball of Fire, the Capra films, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and High Noon, and his work in dozens of other less notable films was routinely professional and convincing. He could be a tad wooden, especially later in his career, and was somewhat limited in the type of roles for which he was suited, but this was fairly typical of studio era when performers were more stars than they were actors. For the most part, however, Cooper deserved the reputation and status he deserved.

I will never forget the first time that I saw the movies "High Noon" and "Sgt.York". I was fascinated with both the storylines and Gary Cooper. Give me the classic actors with the classic stories. Hollywood should take a trip back in time and learn something.

Quiet determined BEAUTY! If the role was right, he shone as bright as any star Hollywood ever knew. Some felt he was simple, but he was actually too complex to identify easily and simple was just the hole he got stuck in. Read David Bret's _Valentino_ for some really interesting stuff about Cooper and Valentino, where they met and what they did. Yikes. Give us some more of these gems and Hollywood might just make a comeback to another Golden Era.

How can you not forget "High Noon"? This movie was made for him. He also shined in "Seargant York" and "Pride of the Yankees". It's sad that as we move further ahead of the studio era of movies, that he is a forgotten actor.

Gregory Peck is my idea of believable low key. Gary Cooper, on the other hand, is SO low key, had I been one of his directors, I would have been tempted to constantly stop production and check for a pulse. On top of that, each of his characters seemed imperceptible from the other. Not to mention that he delivered his lines like near sited guy with a bad memory straining to see a teleprompter. Not all oldies are goodies.

I did not see a lot of his movies, but the ones I did I liked him. He was good in Meet John Doe.He was like the " regular Joe" he played a lot of characters that was about the regular american guy going to work and dealing with injustice.
