Very significant, although perhaps a touch behind some other items on this list on a world-wide scale.

What is most interesting is that such a brutally corrupt and oppressive system ended with a relatively minimal amount of violence.

A great victory for those people. This has to rate on the top ten of great things that came to be in that decade.

The ending of apartheid is like the emancipation of the slaves in the U.S., probably even a bigger achievement. It was a long time coming, many men and women, sometimes children were killed in the struggle to bring down this horrible system.

One of the most postive developments in the 1990s. Thankfully it went out ..not with a bang.. but a whimper.
