Though probably one of the more remote sites, Abu Simbel would be one of my top four must sees in Egypt after the Giza pyramids, Alexandria, and the areas around Luxor. These colossal statues of Rameses II and his queen where threaten by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, but were moved in pieces to preserve the ruins. The original carvings were placed at the top of the Upper Nile (ie Southern Egypt) to mark the boundary of the pharaohs as travelers moved north into the country, a strong symbol of regal power and authority indeed.
