Harold Schechter and David Everitt, authors of the book the A to Z encyclopedia of Serial Killers, call Panzram(1891-1930) the most unregenerate murderer in the annals of American crime. Litany of his crimes is truly astonishing. From a dirt poor German-American farming family in Minnesota, Carl started his criminal career by getting arrested at age eight for drunk and disorderly behavior. It was downhill ever since. Embittered by years of torture, beatings and sexual abuse both in and out of reform school and prison, Panzram evolved into a man who was in his own words: the spirit of meanness personified. His killing spree spanned two continents. In my lifetime I have murdered 21 human beings, I have committed thousands of burglaries, robberies, larcenies, arsons and last but not least I have committed sodomy on more than 1000 male human beings. For all these things I am not in the least bit sorry. Panzram was a true misanthrope, and when wasn't fantasizing about poisoning towns with arsenic, he spent his time plotting a grand scheme to incite war between the British and the Americans. Still, Panzram wasnt just a simple-minded thug. His writings(he wrote an extraordinary 20,000 word confession.) show a man of some intelligence and introspection, a self-revelation that few killers achieve despite years of reflection in the slow-moving world of todays Death Row.( When renowned psychologist Dr. Menninger wrote about his case, he made the following observation: I have never seen an individual whose destructive impulses were so completely accepted and acknowledged by his conscious ego.) He taught himself to read in prison and his favorite authors were Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang on September 5, 1930. Panzram was pleased, and admonished the Society for the Abolishment of Capital Punishment for trying to save his life: I prefer to die that way, and if I have a soul and if that soul should burn in Hell for a million years, still I prefer that to a lingering, agonizing death in some prison dungeon or a padded cell in a mad house... The only thanks you or your kind will ever get from me for your efforts on my behalf is that I wish you all had one neck and that I had my hands on it... I have no desire to reform myself. My only desire is to reform people who try to reform me, and I believe that the only way to reform people is to kill 'em. My motto is: 'Rob 'em all, rape 'em all, and kill 'em all' He was hanged at Fort Leavenworth Prison, Kansas. Asked by the hangman if he wanted to make a last statement, he snapped, Yes, hurry it up, you Hoosier bastard! I could hang a dozen men while you're fooling around! Panzram stood 6 feet tall, 210 pounds of muscle and is the one guy in history that I would not have like to have met on a dark night.
