I met Mr. Rogers in 1986 when I was 17. One rainy day, my mother, aunt and I were walking down a hallway in a building in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. An older guy dressed in a dark trench coat and fedora walked by us, closing his umbrella. He briefly nodded and, after he had passed, we all stopped and stared at each other - "was that really ..." I turned around and asked "Excuse me, you wouldn't be Mister Rogers?" He stopped, half turned around, and said something like "Why yes (with an odd Willy Wonka-like grin) and who would you be?" Well, next thing we knew, we were in his office getting a complete tour - the puppets, trains, scripts, etc. etc. ... even a look at his family photo album - and he asked all about each one of us. If we were there 2 minutes, we were there an hour! This all sounds kind of weird and I'm not religious, but there was an odd, extremely good feeling we got from him. It's hard to describe - saint-like is all I can think of. Anyway just a personal story about him.

I'm glad to see that he's rated so high. He was beloved to many children, including me and I was quite sad the day he died. He devoted his entire life to children and I hate that cynical people feel the need to indignify him.

Probably the most satirized celebrity in history. Still, he was a very good person and as much as his show drives me nuts, my son loved the show. My mother says I really enjoyed when I was 4, although that's hard for me to imagine. In many respects, Rogers was the force that created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the smarting up of children's programming - including Sesame Street. By all accounts he was a warm and generous human being.

A wonderful, kind man who taught us good, wholesome values. He will definitely be missed.

A calming influence on a generation of children who needed reassurance, even if it was through their television set. A kind and gentle soul. The world would be a much better place if there were more like Fred Rogers around. Even though his show was often parodied, it was innovative in many ways and he will surely be missed.

Fred Rogers was one of the greatest people that ever lived. An inspiration to everyone. However, I am mainly writing this post in response to the he was a sniper post. That is untrue. It's a falacious rumor that's totally false (if you don't believe me, do the research yourself. any reputable source will confirm it). Fred Rogers was never, in any way, involved in the military. This is (like i said above) a fallacy that people tend to believe simply because they hear it. It's right up there with thinking the F word is derived from Fornication Under Consent of the King, and being able to see a ghost of a dead child in Three Men and a Baby. I implore people to do more research on things they hear before they go posting them. If something sounds weird, or even if you just go huh, I've never heard that before, research it. Thanks to the magic of the internet, it doesn't take long either. I apologize if I sound preachy or overzealous, but not only is this a big issue for me in general, but I have more respect for Fred Rogers than probably anybody else I can think of. Be happy, be healthy, be kind.

he was around since i was a kid. i could to this day sing that song he sings when he changes into his mr rogers sweater and shoes. you are luckier than my family they just had to hear me sing it. he was educational and he had the ability to get children interested. i loved the land of makebelieve. i collect puppets anyway so i thought they were cool

Usually watched his show when I was younger. His show wasn't for everybody, but he taught many valuable lessons to kids that watched, which is admirable.

Mr. Rogers is cool, but did you know he was a sniper in Vietnam with 30+ confirmed kills? The sweaters were to cover the tatoos!

Being a child of the 80's, I enjoyed two pleasures in life: Teddy Ruxpin & Mr. Rogers. When he went, so did part of my childhood. He was great man, and he will be missed.

People who say that they are afraid of Mr. Rogers cannot seem to find out how he is genteel in his voice and very educating. He is a great advocate in peace and giving advice that we can use in life could you remember- a few days after 9/11, can you remember that he gently and somewhat solemnly spoke on how to cope? He has this no waves attitude that anyone can appreciate- even congress held him in high regard when he wanted more funding for public television. You cannot find anyone else that can be a mentor. Some may say Barney will become the next, but when there is a national disaster, would his bubbly voice be silly for consoling you? Take in consideration that he won many medals in his lifetime devotion to children's programming. If he is Catholic, the tenth Commandment that states, Do not covet your neighbor and love thy neighbor will be easy to remember and apply to life whenever you want to make friends or feel what they're feeling whenever there is a tragedy. He is and will forever be a friendly neighbor for people young and old. I miss him ever so much, and I love him. May he watch us from above. ;-)

An influencial guy in any 5 year old's life. I never much did care for the show, but he was a ood christian man and the show was actually pretty cute. I'm sure he'll be missed by many.

I think he would have made one hell of a salesman at a shoe store....he was really talented taking those shoes on and off, he made changing your shoes fun.....He even had the flat screen tv on the wall, way beyond his time...

Mr. Rogers was an inspiration to every little boy and girl. you would sit in front of your television to watch something wholesome and funny, something that you enjoyed while learning, he had incredible patients and a giving heart. he is one to remember forever.

He was a genuinely sweet man who loved children and wanted to help them. People who say he's creepy are just paranoid. He was not a freak.

I remember reading somewhere that adults always had the sneaking suspicion that something perverted was going to surface about Mr. Rogers. That he was just too creepy, that deep down he HAD to be a child molestor or something. The funny thing about this guy, is that he wasn't. He was apparently as sweet and nice and humble as his TV personality - a man that devoted his life to kids, and a man worthy of their trust.

He was such an advocate for children. A gentle kind man who welcomed children into his neighborhood with open arms. I have heard that he really was every bit as nice as he appeared on television. Was a nice influence he was on children. He will be missed.

I agree with those who say that the Mr. Rogers persona was a little creepy. Atleast as seen through the eyes of an adult. But I remember my little brothers being fascinated with him when they were young. He had a sweet gentle nature that made adults seem not so intimidating to kids.

I grew up with Mr. Rogers so I can still remember him through a child's eyes without the thought of suspicion or oddness. I loved him. I always wished he was my own grandfather. With a gnetle voice, he taught children good morals and entertained them at the same time.

I did watch his show when I was little. I remember being confused as to why he always changed his changed his shoes and put on a sweater. I liked the puppets, but they kind of creeped me out. His voice never changed either. I wonder when he was on his deathbed if God called to him and said won't you be my neighbor? ;)

I've said elsewhere that this guy always creeped me out. I wouldn't have trusted my kids with him. He always looked like he had short eyes to me.

Truly a shame...this man raised so many children, and now children will not be able to grow up with him. Where are kids going to learn the depths of changing your sweaters when you enter a house now?
