World Gym 1

I joined World Gym located at 1001 E. Colorado Blvd Glendale, CA 91205 (818-243-1600) in July 2007. The facility initially appeared clean, though I took a quick tour of the facility with out a representative because they were busy at the time of my visit. The gym is spacious, has great air circulation and offers a variety of classes. I signed a one year contract and agreed to pay $29.00 per month. Though my intent was to attend the gym on a regular basis, I was soon dissuaded by the lack of maintenance. The weight area is always a mess. Plates are left strewn about the floor and barbells lie scattered on the floor whereever they were used last. The different bars and ropes which are used on stationary machines are also left scattered on the floor. Evidently, the members are not sufficiently motivated to clean up after themselves nor do they seem aware that their failure to return things to where they belong, has an affect on other patrons. The staff also does not seem sufficiently motivated to patrol the gym and return weights and plates to the areas where they should have been replaced. Finally, the management seems devoid of the fact that part of their responsibility includes reminding partrons that they should demonstrate consideration for others by returning equipment to its proper place. Deciding to cancel my membership, I referred to the contract I signed in July 2007 and discovered a claus which was never alluded to by the representative with whom I signed the agreement. The gym will not automatically cancel an agreement on the 1 year anniversary. The patron is responsible for calling the gym and requesting cancellation otherwise the gym continues on debiting the member's account. Cancellation can only be requested in writing and MUST BE MAILED TO THE GYM. The gym pass must be returned in accompaniment of the letter along with a check in the amount of $35.00! I wonder how World Gym justifies the $35.00 charge? Administration fees? On 7/24/08 I mailed my letter, my pass and a check for $35 to the gym, but on 7/26/08 discovered that my account had been debited another $29, for the month of July 26th through August 26th. I called Mariah, the person who processes cancellations, and was rudely told that though she received my request on 7/26/08, World Gym had a right to charge me for an additional month of service IN ADDITION TO THE $35.00 CANCELLATION FEE! I reminded her that I returned my pass at the time I requested cancellation of my membership. Mariah replied, "You can use the gym. Just bring your driver license." I guess Mariah suffers from a comprehension impediment. Though I included my reason for canceling my membership in my final letter, Mariah seems to have deluded herself into believing that she could force me to continue patronizing her shoddy establishment. A beautiful gym populated by an embarassingly unprofessional staff. Avoid World Gym!

World Gym 1

I was a member of a World Gym in Tempe, AZ...great facilities - but awful business. They run their memberships through a tertiary company in Denver, and once they get their hands on your name and address - watch out. I signed up for a 6 month member ship and paid in full. Even though my gym was closed down four months later, I was signed up for a 35 year membership at another World Gym in a completely different area code without my permission...not even a message in the mail to notify me. They gave me no opportunity to cancel a membership renewal, even though they promised to send me the forms in the mail. Months later, I'm still battling them. Awful, underhanded business practices. Steer as far clear as possible from World Gym.
