To say that the massacre of the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics was not the most appalling moment in Olympic history is absurd and insulting. Nevermind the fact it was the most appalling moment in Olympic history, it was THE most appalling event in sports history. This single event showed the world the brutal savagery and senselessness of terrorists who will go to any means to disrupt any peace in the civilized world. While the Israeli athletes ought to be always remembered, their killers (who left a permanent scar on the Games) ought to burn in hell for being the worthless cowards they truly are.

I was 10 years old at the time and it was my first time following the Olympics. Remember asking Dad if the Olympics always caused this kind of thing -- and if so what's so great about them?? Had no concept of why anyone would do such a thing unless they were pure evil. Only later did I realize how correct that thought was.

They took an event which has always transcended war and grudges against other countries. An event which boiled down to the simple principle of man against man in a friendly sport. They used this peaceful event to commit cowardly and brutal acts, and for that those terrorists will always be remembered as human garbage.

Nothing on this list compares to this. Nothing. Hopefully, no future games will provide anything worse. A despicable act, made worse by a bungling security effort. A wake up call that was only heeded, ironically, by the West Germans, who turned their military and police training towards anti-terrorist directions well before any other western state.

I was kind of young but I recall that day vividly. The tragedy spanned that entire day as the abductions occurred early in the morning (Eastern Time) until about 9:00 PM that evening when Jim McKay mad the horrific announcement that They're all gone. It was the first time I heard the term TERRORISM. Having also learned about the Holocaust, I kind of wondered at the time (and to this day) that had the Olympics been anywhere else instead of Germany, would the outcome have been different? It seemed liked the rescue efforts were bungled up royally by the German security forces. I find it plausible that some baby-faced SS executioners in 1945 could have feasibly grown up to become middle-aged police lieutenants who may have been more supportive of the captors than the captives. The fact that Israel won their first Gold Medal in the '04 Olympics is a testament to the resiliency of this pit-bull tough little country.

This horrible drama shows the wanton disregard for innocent people these islamofascists harbor. The fact that they would utilize this spectacular international stage to further their cause and reputation is so despicable, it's hard to imagine and harder to put words around. The poor, innocent Israeli athletes paid the supreme sacrifice, because nobody realized the depth of hatred of these animals. Surely the most appalling moment in Olympic History.

They're all gone. An absolutely ghastly event, I don't know how anything else comes close.

There really shouldn't be any serious debate whether the Massacre at the Munich Games is the most appalling moment in modern Olympic history. There are certain things that should be sacred (for lack of a better word), such as the Red Cross/Crescent and the Olympic Games. The actions of these terrorists not only evidence how differently some cultures are from ours (perhaps even to the point of non-coexistence) but also the lack of respect that such actions deserve.

Actually, Yasser Arafat and Company, still know how fortunate they are to be negotiating with Jews. This atrocity was an obvious preview of coming attractions.

This war in the middle East between Isreal and Palestine needs to end. Too many people are dying because of this conflict. And I, for one, am sick of hearing about their land rights! Just share the land!

This was the most disgusting moment in not just olympic history, but all of sports history. It wasn't fair to drag innocent talented athletes into the fight between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Yes it was probably THE lowpoint in olympic history, but don't think that the middle east problems are the fault of the Palestinians. Besides, the athletes only died when the police made the ill-advised move of rushing the helicopter and causing an explosion. Afterwards, the Mossad took violent and widespread revenge against a variety of Palestinian men, some of whom were innocent. There are two sides to every conflict.

This was a horrible, senseless and useless tragedy that happened in Munich. This is a perfect example of how pointless, evil and stupid terrorists and terrorism is. It accomplishes nothing and causes death.

(The rating is based on how appalling the event was, now how much I liked it). I can't think of a worse incident in the Olympics than this! It's tragic that this kind of thing would happen at an event which brings the world together in unity.

Disgusting, no doubt. Hitler is the most insane person in the history of the world, and I am glad he died before I ever came into this world. terribly sad

Whenever I think of an act of terrorism by Moslem extremists, (Sept 11, Bali bombing) all involving innocent people, I think of what poor Israel has had to put up with for all of these many years. This appalling event in 1972 sums it all up. Disgusting and disgraceful.

This was a heart-breaking tragedy. The cowardly scum who murdered these innocents made it very easy for the rest of us to form our views on the middle eastern issues involved.

This goes beyond "appalling." That the Palestinians chose to murder defenseless civilian athletes during an event of world togetherness as a political statement... is so horrifying ... so animal ... that it makes me want to throw up.
