Niven is one of my favorite actors. Perhaps his greatest shortcoming was that he almost always (there were a few exceptions) injected humor even when it may have seemed inappropriate to the movie. But, he was a very witty guy. Some of my favorite roles were in The Guns of Navarone and The Best of Enemies (late '50s or early '60s movie about the British and Italians fighting each other in Ethiopia or Somaliland, I can't remember which).
