A wildly divisive character, America's first openly transvestite President and the man responsible for extending voting rights to Boll Weevils.  I'm just surprised that there isn't a more lively debate here about whether or not John Tyler was over or under rated.

He established the legitimacy of the Vice-Presidency despite tremendous pressure and protests from those who felt he should step down. For that, he is underrated for his contribution to the powers of the presidency.
