Vague. What do you mean zero tolerance? how is this any different than our stance on terrorism pre-9/11? Silly, empty, politico speak.

What is it you propose exactly? Zero Tolerance you say. Then that means pulling out of the UN and to stop dealings with all rogue states. Why would this happen? Do some research on world affairs and policy to understand it won't. What about the American Union, will this not mean even less security for the USA and fully open borders. Exactly. The EU has open borders. Still have to use passports and soon to use Biometric ID/passports but none of that prevents terror at all. Remember the madrid bombings? Remember the WTC Attacks on 9/11? The CIA said they were able to salvage passports and ID from the WTC inferno when even concrete was crushed and bombed into dust. SO what to belive, who to belive. Get sifting through some data then find ways to fight terror.

What? This isn't sexual harassment here, it's terrorism. Besides, what would it accomplish? What possible good could it ever do? So the terrorists will know that we won't put up with anymore of their nonsense, or what? I am constantly baffled by people who think that these kinds of ideas are worth debating.

I believe that we need to take a hardheaded approach to terrorism aimed at hurting American citizens. It is a law enforcement problem to an extent. The terrorists goal was to coerce the American government to meet certain political objectives, namely they wanted us out of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. If we're going to make the US a safer place, we have to acknowledge the why question before we go on a crusade to end all political terrorism. We have to establish parameters as to what's a terrorist organization that intends to harm American interests and who has nothing to do with us. At the end of the day, such a strategy will strengthen our position in the world by demonstrating that we are willing to correct the problem by force if necessary and it won't stir up any other hornet nests. Bush's invasion of Iraq took that focus away from our fight in Afghanistan and Pakistan and that region should be our main goal at the moment concerning the fight on terrorism. We have to focus in like a laser beam; if we lose track by picking unnecessary fights, we lose a lot political and military capital. Of course, the fight on terrorism isn't all about military solutions, some of it is developing better human intelligence and a lot of it is cooperating with countries who have a terrorist problems. Some countries like Pakistan harbor terrorists will be more willing to crack down on terrorism if we create more incentives for them to do so. Threats don't work all the time; many times it only stirs up the political waters more than is necessary. I say that we do need to adapt a zero-tolerance attitude towards terrorism, but we have to be realistic here; terrorism isn't going to go away anytime soon. Its as if Bush said he wants to eliminate murder from the world; a decent goal but it isn't going to happen. The key is a strong defensive attitude.

I see where magellan is coming from on this issue. Every terrorist attack does indeed need to be examined individually. However, with regards to terrorism, we DO need to adopt a zero-tolerance policy and implement many of the options on this list to deal with them.

One persons terrorist is another persons freedom fighter. Remember the American war of Independance - were they terrorists by todays standards? Should they have been wiped out by a 'Coalition of the willing'? I'm obviously not talking about Al Quaida here because they dont seem to have any kink of moral or justifiable goals.

Adopting a zero toleranace policy against terrorists is a great idea! Our country has been attacked. The enemy has a zero tolerance policy towards us. We dont need to "examine" attacks. We are at war, attacks could happen any minute. The terrorists are going to keep coming, whether we like it or not, unless we forcibly stop them.

Terrorism is effectively a term that a recognized government uses to define factions vying for a multitude of things including freedom and self-rule. The US should only be involved in terrorism that effects us because we cannot decide what is legitamate freedom-fighting and what is factional terrorism.

No terrrorist groups should be allowed to feel safe anywhere on earth. A good terrorist is a dead or inprisoned one.

This is bad policy for one major reason. This opens the door for the government to railroad many people into long prison sentinces for not conforming to the so called accepted social norms, and not really having anything to do with terrorism at all.

I agreee completely with Lord of the Waves. We are now really being welcomed to the nightmare that the Israelis have lived for over 50 years in the Middle East. It is going to end up being that if you say anything against the U.S. government, you will be deported or arrested or something. An overall bad idea.

Of course! All people, regardless of gender, political beliefs, sexual orientation, economic fealty, etc., have a basic human right to live as they choose without another person infringing upon their human dignity. It is not right for someone to impose, by force, their beliefs and attitudes upon another. We've seen this happen all too often--in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, East Timor, New Caledonia, the Montana Militia, et. al., and look what has happened in those places. I also believe that just because someone strikes me does not give me license to strike back physically; there are other ways of solving the problem without using violence, because then it becomes a never-ending cycle.

Absolutely, positively, we MUST adopt a zero tolerance attitude toward terrorism. Do I need to remind anyone that on September 11, 2001, Arab Muslims declared their holy war against The United States of America. To have a policy that is anything less than zero tolerance is sort of like saying on December 7, 1941, "if the Japanese bomb us one more time, we're going to send them a really sterm memo". Come on! Like it or not, we have been attacked and dragged into war. Our enemies are well organized, well funded, and highly motivated Arab muslims. Dismissing them as fringe fanatics is a terrible mistake. They are not a small fringe group. They will not rest until their goal is accomplished. We, the people of The United States, can not rest until these barbaric third world monsters are obliterated.

Why is it that whenever I hear the words "zero-tolerance", my blood runs cold? Considering how all of our other "zero-tolerance" policies have turned out, my guess is that three months from now, there would be some new rules: 1) Students must, at all times, carry semi-automatic rifles and wear bullet-proof vests. 2) Any, we repeat ANY Middle Eastern plane that looks as though it will enter the US, will be shot down the second it is sighted. 3) Books on the Middle East, Afghanistan, Muslims, etc. etc. etc., may under no circumstances be displayed on the shelves of school library. 4) Any songs that have "violent words" (e.g. kill, shoot, terror, hit, punch, cut, etc.) may absolutely not be bought from stores or given radio play. It could encourage youngsters to repeat this act. 5) Each school, elementary, middle, or high, must have the following extra-curricular activities: junior branch of Army, riflery team, Osama bin Laden Watch Squad, bomb constructing. 6) Schools, elementary, middle, and high, MUST have a "terrorist plane heading for school" drill. This is essential to our childrens' lives. 7) There will be armed guards on every spot of the American coastline. These guards will shoot anything suspicious, and if it turns out to be someone/something innocent, too bad (guards, you will get NO breaks). 8) Government officials must be clothed in bullet proof everythings and surrounded on all sides by Secret Service members before going out anywhere in public. 9) AIDS research, Social Security, gay rights, elections, must be disregarded from here on out. Everyone will be too concerned with this more important issue than those silly little things. 10) All U.S. citizens, regardless of age, are required to donate $100 at least to the Army for new guns, bombs, boats, planes, anything else we forgot to mention. Anyone who does not pay will be subject to up to five years in prison. 11) All students seen carrying books, CDs, films, comics that have ANYTHING to do with planes will automatically be suspended for at least ten days and will be forced to pay a fine. 12) Metal detectors will be installed in all public buildings, and anyone who does not go through these detectors will be treated as a felon. 13) If you haven't donated blood by now, DO IT! We don't care if you have AIDS, hemophilia, cancer, diabetes or whatever! Just DO IT!!!!! 14) No one, and that means NO ONE will be permitted to carry box-cutters on a plane, but all Americans are welcome to carry guns and fire upon anything, including passengers, that look suspicious. 15) Every week, we will hold an object search in which everyone must participate. Look for objects big enough to, when dropped, break an Afghan's neck. Wear bullet-proof vests while doing this. Do I make myself clear? If we adopt a so-called "zero-tolerance" attitude toward ANYTHING, we will live in a paranoid world for the rest of our lives. Not tolerating terrorism isn't a bad idea, but we have a tendency to take things to the extreme and invite MORE attack while we are in the process of making stupid rules for people to follow. I know we would with this subject. Take care.

I would have to agree with magellan that "Zero Tolerance" anything is scary because it means that rules are enforced no matter what the situation, which means people don't think about it in depth to see the true consequences of their actions. Also, I believe the U.S. already has a very low tolerance for terrorism in our country. When has terrorism ever been tolerated and allowed to go on here, when we know it's going on? Claiming to adopt a "Zero Tolerance" policy on terrorism may sound good, but I'm not sure it's going to help.

"Zero Tolerance" anything kind of scares me. It makes me think of 14 year olds getting the death penalty, and an honor student getting suspended for bringing a protractor on the school bus. Every situation is different, the geopolitical climate can change from day to day. I would rather our leaders examine each terrorist act independently, and respond using judgement as opposed to an inflexible code.

This is no longer in the theoretical "woulda, shoulda, coulda" category. Our country HAS been invaded. The important thing - first and foremost - is to positively identify those responsible and then deal with them accordingly. They have demonstrated that they deserve nothing less than "zero-tolerance". Standing by a conviction to do this would not only be a service to our country but to the world.
