We cannot gauge the effectiveness of socialism because it has never been implemented anywhere in the world. The countries that proclaim themselves to be socialist or communist were and are just full of s__t. State-run capitalist and totalitarian regimes...down to a one. Marx had written that after the revolution there would have to be a brief period of dictatorship over the wealthy few before the socialist state could be fully established. Apparently that has been interpreted as horrifying, rights-abolished murdering mayhem for the next millenium. Not what Marx had in mind, but anyone who has a brain has already figured that much out. How can one rate an untested theory? I dunno, so I'll go with a 5 because it is certainly a beautiful one. The dream isn't over (despite John Lennon's song :-). Look into the Socialist Labor Party for an accurate interpretation of Marxism.

I agree Animal Farm is a classic, I read it in the 5th grade, but it represents communism in a truthful way. It stated that they overthrow the farmertsar and replace him with the pigs:Snowball and Napoleon.Trotsky and Stalin In the end he says that the pigsStalin had so much power that they were the farmersTsars.

The most important thing for a political philosophy is that it is pragmatic, and can work in reality. Communism seems to attract romantic kids throughout the ages, because they want a nice myth and don't give a damn whether it makes sense or not. And then they go believing that, it's only the actions of some dumb leaders that made communism so awful in practice. That's not the case. Read F.A. Hayek's The Road to Serfdom to understand why the worst always get on top under commmunism. There is a reason why millions upon millions were murdered in the USSR, China, Cambodia... and on to this day in North Korea. This is a horrifying philosophy that has produced untold evil in this world.

In one or two ways, yes. Now, before you go calling me to go the CCCP, here me out! I only agree with some of Communisms ideas. I believe that all citizens should be given SOMETHING by their government, for being a law-abiding citizen. However, I don't agree with not having personal possesions (too much of a materialist :)), because people should be able to own what they desire.

The deeds and actions of the corrupt leaders of communist nations have forever tarnished communism. There has not been a successful communist nation on this planet as of yet, but I do not think that the political ideology or its practicioners are bad or even wrong.

Oddly enough this is what people accuse me of being the most. I suppose this accusation would hold some weight if we're talking about commune-ism (where the state has withered away to purely administrative functions and production is controlled to satisfy the truism each to his ability, each to his need). However many so-called communist regimes are very strong state-isms where a small oligarchy or the orwellian new bourgeoisie control everything (how well life has actually worked out for people in these regimes vastly differs but the point is none of them could really be considered communal by nature). So anyway, though I feel a lot of sympathy for the various democratically minded communists I know for all the flack they get, I still think history is a very complex and ever evolving process and idealism should always be tempered by realistic pragmatism (ie: one theory does not prepare one for every possibility or circumstance). Which is why I prefer Keynesianism.
