A brilliant lawyer and state judge, Rutledge was unfortunately and outlandishly outspoken. Sparking the bitter resentment of President George Washington's opponents, he was denied a full appointment as the nation's second Chief Justice. Soon after, he seemed to become unstable, further ruining his once brilliant reputation. John Rutledge was, in essence, a tragic figure.
