the tiger is the best all around fighting vehicle of ww2. I think it is underated by most. what makes it the best is the fact that it is made up of so many details i cant even list them all. there is a whole lot more to a tank than just armor, firepower and manuverability. Also when comparing this tank to other tanks it has the highest strength to weakness ratio. one thing i would like to resolve is that the tiger was not a slow lumbering monster, in fact quite the opossite. it had a speed of 38 km hr, an excellent length to width ratio, and low groundpressure, which made it very manuverable, especially for weight and size. it was made of the best quality and than any other tank.

In terms of armor, armament and psychological effects, the Tiger tank has to be ranked in the top echelon of tanks. While it suffered from being too heavy, slow and prone to breakdowns and mechanical problems, the Tiger tank is recognized as the most feared tank of the Second World War.

As an American, it is nice to believe in the utility of the American Sherman or the Russian T34, but in actually operations, in the field, the weapons were as feared as any weapon on the battlefield. The Tiger had a superior gun in the 88mm, and the armor was more than enough protection against almost any tank the Allies could field. While not perfect and its overly complicated design did not allow for mass or rapid production, these weapons were the mainstay of the panzer corps.
Should you have the opportunity to speak to any American or Russian tank operators, they would never say that they felt confident going up against this behemoth.

A-1 piece of junk. Other than armour and gun, it's got NOTHING.

Large, heavy, expensive, unreliable. The only reason Germany was even able to produce and use such a device was because the didn't have to cross an ocean. They were slow, had poor manuvering, and by the end of the war more like speed bumps then weapons. You say that most of them were "blown up" by their own crews...you mean the crews that were running from infantry and shermans/T34's? The american tactics have always been to out smart the enemy. We had to build the tanks, ship them to the other side of the planet, deploy them and fight with them. With half the time to design, produce, and deploy that the Germans had. They had a rough decade to figure out what to build, where to put them, how to ship them, and how to fight with them. The war started for us in basically 42. I think that just the fact that we were able to meet the Germans in battle was awesome. We were not always the military power we are now. Our army was smaller than the army of Greece! We came from that to one of the only standing military powers in the world. After WW2 and the display of power we made there was only one other country that could have even questionably stood up to the U.S. hence the cold war. If the tables were turned and Germany had tried to invade the U.S. we would have most certainly used our experemental heavy super tanks, and Germany would have used a smaller tank Panzer at best because of the difficulty of getting them here. The end results of the war would have been the same. War is a board game in washington...it goes like this- control of: Air, Sea, Shipping, Supply lines, Numbers, Mobility= a war that is already won. It's great that Germany had a fortress on wheels, but you have to be able to move that fortress from place to place as fast as the enemy is moving from place to place and still be effective in order to win. This wasen't the case, and thats why we are all typing in English. The Tiger's were known, in fact hounded by breaking down at just the wrong time, and couldn't chase down an old lady with a walker. Compared to other tanks of the war they were more like mobil bunkers. The American and Russian tanks could run right past them due to sheer numbers, and never be caught. You don't have to blow up all of your enemies tanks to when a war, so why fool with it. Our tactics were offensive so that gives us the flexibility. They had to stop ALL of our tanks because we were attacking them. You have to remember that point. If we never blew up a single German tank, we could have still won the war. The objective was to win, not blow up tanks. The Germans would have beter spent there efforts at regaining control of some of the things listed above rather than Tiger production. Bad tactical decision making, and the severe lack of reliablilty makes this a 2 star if any in my opinion.

My favorite of WWII based on appearance alone. Brute force and armour thickness. No fancy games about angled surfaces and what have you.

It is true that the t-34 and sherman could only win by gang tatics. It also should be noted that more than half on the Tigers lost were destroyed by thier own crews.I just read in a book about the Tigers and thier combat history and it also listed every Tiger built and what happened to it.One story of a Tiger battilion in Italy had 45 Tanks and while moving in retreat up the boot they had to destroy 29 Tanks because of break downs and lack of fuel. Also some of the tanks lost in combat were blown up because they could not be recovered. It was a really fearsome Tank, It is also my faverite one.

Assuming our tanks would be working in their most ideal conditions, this would be the winner. By itself, this tank was nearly unstoppable. Like the Sherman, the T-34 was built in numbers and won by gang tactics. The Tiger's armor was equal and the gun superior to the T-34

production was very complex, and maintenance work was needed all the time, but its firepower and armour put fear into its enemies nearly every time.

A truly terrifying weapon by all accounts, but I can't justify a five. Too few were built, and they were apparently damn hard to maintain in the field. The handful that made it into service gave their opponents all the hell they could handle and more.

I believe the Tiger family (Tiger I and Tiger II) were the best tanks of the war- problem was, they came out too little and/or too late to make a real difference for the Germans. Stories of a single Tiger knocking out scores of Shermans and T34s abound among memoirs.
