Peter: "The Oakland Athletics are 3-5 this season when the temperature is greater than 73 degrees but less than 65 degrees given a +/-3 degree variance on Thursdays but excluding all other days asides from the second Wednesday of next week if it's partly cloudy but with a 30% chance of rain or Rickey Henderson playing again." I like reading him better than listening to him, but he's smart, incisive and seems to have a broad range of solid sources.
esolvent 10/23/2008
Gammons is one of the best baseball reports in the last 40 years. He is thorough, in depth and always offers a lot of unique insight in a very thoughtful and well articulated way. Peter has a style of his own both speaking and writing, and has set the bar in baseball journalistic integrity.
angryjed 12/03/2007
don't agree with everything he says. but I respect his work for the most part and love to talk about the game.
Loerke 01/15/2007
Unattractive uber-nerd with an unfortunate tendency to appear arrogant still gets more authentic inside information than anyone else. Undeserving of the "legendary" status Red Sox fans accord him, but still solid enough. Loses one point for nearly ruining Neil Young's "Powderfinger" for me by covering it at the Boston music festival "Hot Stove Cool Music" in 2007. Listen, kids: Baseball and rock do not mix. Take a lesson from Scott Spiezio and Barry Zito, and never ever pick up a guitar again. Thanks.

He needs to brush his teeth, they are very yellow.
gobolts 12/15/2005
Love him or hate him, Gammons has got it goin on. He is THE name to throw when you're talking baseball. It is the prescence of Gammons that makes ESPN's Baseball Tonight so popular.
kegtapper 12/09/2005
really doesn't know baseball. Knows how to talk to the right information feeders. When it comes down to it, in a bar setting where you just talk sports, Gammons would stand out like a housewife.
oscargamblesfr o 11/11/2005
Makes mistakes, overrates prospects out of all proportion in a way not unlike the manager Sparky Anderson did. Does have a Red Sox bias, but was the best baseball newspaper writer of his era, hands down, plus is very knowledgeable and insightful still, is an astute and informed fan of rock music, and does commendable charity work. Never boring to listen to either.
Jmb88 11/08/2005
One of the most intelligent baseball guys out there. A pleasure to listen to him on the radio and watch his reports on TV. He knows his stuff.
Optimus Prime 09/04/2005
Fundamental part of Baseball Tonight despite the heavy Red Sox bias. Knows his baseball.
Alex12 08/05/2005
He does stumble over his words and he does have a Red Sox bias, but he is one of the great baseball journalists of all time. That's why Peter Gammons is now a member of the baseball Hall Of Fame.
southparker9 04/22/2005
Great unapologetic Red Sox fan. Very good judge of talent. A great asset to ESPN.
37102002 04/03/2005
supposed to be the baseball guru, but he always seems to be mumbling something incoherently.
B-Cash 04/03/2005
kinda smart but sucks up to Barry Bonds the steroid king...barry the best ever...shut up old man....bonds is on steriods and he's not even close to the best player ever..u should be smart enuff to kno that
mtbmlb 03/03/2005
Has a vast wealth of baseball knowledge and makes accurate predictions.
clinevol98 12/21/2004
Great baseball knowledge, but seems arrogant.
riffraff 12/17/2004
Self-appointed, stuffy New England baseball guru. ESPN exaggerates his talent by introducing a breaking story with the statement that Peter Gammons reports that... when other outlets often have the story long before he does. Good, but not THAT good.
Wavebacker 12/11/2004
Peter Gammons is the best baseball guy around. If you want to know what's going on, find out who might get traded, what a team is thinking, where a team stands, Gammons is by far the most informed. Before ESPN, he used to write ( and still does I guess) a full page Sunday Baseball article for the Boston Globe. He just knows his stuff and gets all the info you'd want to know. When he's on TV, I immediately pay attention because he knows what he's talking about.
coleslough 05/28/2004
looks like he should be in jackos thriller video
DiamondDavid 04/04/2004
Yes, the Red Sox bias is annoying, and lately he's been stumbling over his words. But he's the guy to watch when the trading deadline draws near.
BeanoCook 02/07/2004
Slipped. Married to 5-6 GM's sources and this leads to huge bias. Actually below average at communicating his ideas. Very populst on issues and sometimes feigns indignation at what, I can only guess. Fixed the crooked mouth problem. Seemed outclassed and stunned by Bobby V's assertiveness last season.
gopman79 02/03/2004
He somehow gets the Red Sox into every trade rumor!
melott 01/26/2004
In addition to saying look 20 times a segment, he says but 15 times a segment as well. He basically has three really good sources, but misfires quite a bit at every trading deadline.
larry_biz 12/23/2003
Old Hickory has decent contacts, decent reporter, but overrated. He does have some insight, however, Tim Kurkjian is much better, much less arrogant, and not as partial to certain teams.
alpepper 12/22/2003
Gammons is insightful. But, has anyone ever met a bigger honk for his team, the Boston Red Sox. Dear ringer for Dead President Andrew Jackson.
yossarian2852 09/14/2003
the MAN ..period..end of story
dougom 09/06/2003
Gammons comes off like he has vast knowledge of the game, but his analysis is frequently weak, premature, or just plain wrong. If one reads what he says, and then tracks his accuracy over time, one finds that he is not nearly as wise or knowlegeable as his presentation (and reputation) would lead you to think. Gammons would be fine for a single market--if he went back to being a columnist for the Globe, for example--but having him doing national-level analysis is absurd.
Philkid3 09/04/2003
He knows his sport, despite the occasional Red Sox bias.
hendo 07/09/2003
1. His Red Sox bias is really ridiculous for a national journalist. 2. He has no sense of humor, and looks completely out of place when Bobby V.and Harold Reynolds are joking around. 3. If I ever see another one of his articles shamelessly plugging his Boston-area band du jour (ex: Kay Hanley) I am going to puke.
cm22lmr 06/30/2003
Knowledgeable, but King of the NE bias in national sports media. Style comes off as too smug.
Gecklund311 06/02/2003
I can't say I'm much of a Peter Gammons fan. He certainly knows the game, but his analysis of young prospects is frequently way off. Gammons also used to have the biggest Barry Larkin fixation of all time, and his relentless hype enabled Barry to win an undeserved MVP years ago.
psychoschmitt 06/02/2003
I lost all respect for Gammons when he picked the Cubs to win the NL Central this year.
grosegreg 06/02/2003
Age ol' classic
tj92101 05/21/2003
He is the MAN!! I love his reports!
getback 05/12/2003
Knows of what he speaks.A rarity in a journalist.
b.green 05/06/2003
Got to love this guy! He looks just like my grandpa.
angusmacpherso n 03/23/2003
Knows baseball better than anyone else...exceptional.
CanadaSucks 03/04/2003
Good baseball reporter. . .solid info. Anyone else thinks he looks like the face on the new 20 dollar bill?
mprater 03/04/2003
When it comes to MLB info, Peter is tops!
wmassie 12/19/2002
More knowledge and less French pastry that anyone in the business.
zuchinibut 12/08/2002
Does any other national sporscaster concentrate so much on his favorite team than Gammons on the Red Sox
golderbj 12/02/2002
knowledge beats appearance and voice
michael_arbor 11/26/2001
His schtick is getting a little old. He is pretty bland, but he does get some inside scoops since he has been around the game for so long.
