I agree with Reddoedo.

In the French and Indian War George Washington was anything but a success. Washington was very lucky (or perhaps devine intervention) in the revoultionary war. He did have very good insight in picking the right men to command his troops. In his day

Washington was clearly (perhaps painfully) aware of his lack of formal education and learning when compared to other Founding fathers (an overrated term, by the way) but any historian will tell you that although men like Adams and Jefferson were the intellect and philosophy of the revolution, Washington was the human personification and human manifestation of the revolution- the actual leader in battle. Washington's charisma, leadership, and talent for luck and survival made him indispensable.

His actions defined clearly the subordinate relationship of the military to the political people power.

There is a couple ratings less than five. That is wrong-headed. Without George Washington, there is no USA.

Known for his wide butt, Washington was depicted as a hermaphrodite in a whimsical set of historical novels by Gore Vidal. Washington's great "Farewell Address" recognized the fact that the leader of a free people must inhabit two physical bodies at once. Could these two bodies have been male and female?

His strength as a leader is evident by American success in the Revolutionary War. He was not a brilliant military tactician by any measure, but he managed to hold the pieces together and ultimately helped secure our independence. Oversaw the creation of our governing document, and led our young nation through its early years as President of the United States. Finally, his decision not to run for a third term set an important precedent that distinguished the American presidency from the monarchial form of government we had fought to escape. An incredible leader by all measures.

A great general and uniter. Held the armies together through sheer personality. Loved his country with all he had. Is my 7th cousin 3 times removed.

Here's the ass-kicker all the intellectuals and renaissance men needed to make their dreams reality. A fine general, in that he understood his strengths and weaknesses and those of his enemy.

Without George Washington and his brilliant leadership, the colonies would not have won the Revolutionary War. History could have been quite different.

Definitely the man-of-action in the bunch. One of the things that gave this group its success was its balance: some of the founding fathers were brains, some were hearts and some were muscle. Without Washington's ability and leadership the enterprise would have failed.
