My gf's 9th grader goes to a school that claims to have a uniform dress code, but there are so many loopholes and exceptions they might as well have no rules at all.Personally, I believe kids should be given as much freedom as possible, though perhaps lots of irrational school rules and regulations might be better preparation for living in our "free society".

I'll fix that -- just put me in charge of a school, and I'll make everyone wear overalls. To allow for creativity, it can be with any shirt of choice. And anyone who is caught not wearing both shoulder straps properly hooked to the bib's corner buttons will have the most severe kind of punishment.Just joking, of course. While I see nothing wrong with a reasonable dress code (or even uniforms, with "dress down" days), there will always be other things the "trendier" kids will see to make fun of on their not-so-popular peers. If it isn't clothes, it's hair, the way they talk, their mannerisms, and so on. Therefore, I am somewhat indifferent about such an issue.

Uniformed students are happy students! They will not break into lockers. They will not find tests annoying. They will not daydream about sex. They will be good citizens.
Their parents won't know where to aim their cameras at graduation...

There is this idiotic idea currently being fostered by the shallow end of the gene pool thinkers, that school uniforms will mean an end to bullying, sexual promiscuity, cliques, cancer, and nuclear proliferation.
The most cursory research shows this to be nonsense, and the so-called proof that it is, on its own, positive doesn't hold up to the most basic examination. It's just another one of those quick fix ideas that some people believe will cure a complex set of problems.

Uniforms are one of the aspects of discipline that must be taught and required in schools. School is a place of learning, not a fashion show which causes distraction and lack of discipline.

Ahhhhgggg. I hate school dress codes. They're lameee. ~Keely

It might cut down on some of the other students making fun of others because they don't have the latest fashion in clothes.

school uniforms suck ass

I think that we as kids or teenagers should not wear uniforms to school. We should be allowed to speak are mines by what we wear, and if teachers have a problem with that then they can dell with it. As for me I speak my mine by what I wear.I think that schools that make you wear uniforms are schools that dont want you to speak your mind or dont care in what you think, and that drives me in sane that schools are like that, or people are like that too.
numbah16tdhaha 12/08/2005
Idiots will be idiots, regardless of what they are wearing. Sometimes the extra boundries only make the real bad kids worse. For the kids that gotta do it, suck it up. There are worse things you can be subjected to. Just ask the kid that I chewed out until he cried while I was in the Marines! (numbah was such an ass back then)

Why are students thinking of how they are going to look when they are going to wear uniforms? So what if its not what they like to wear.Who said school was anything about looking good?

Not a bad Idea. Most jobs require a uniform or dress code, getting people used to it is a good idea. Kids have plenty of other ways to express themselves. It also eliminates the problem of gang colours, kids from other schools showing up and people getting teased for how they dress.
Gothic pride 06/14/2005
Why do you think they make Different clothes in the first place? SO CHILDREN CAN EXPRESS THEMSELVES! they do not want to be wearing the same thing everyday. besides if you were to make them wear uniforms the girls would cut the skirt shorter and the guys would get the pants in a larger size, so either way you are going to lose. Besides there is NO way you would get me into one of them checkered bright colored things anyways.

Wearing school uniforms is the best idea anyone could come up with. If you're against them then you should try working in a school for a while. I worked in a middle school 6-8 for 7 years. Kids came to school with shorts so short you could see their butt cheeks, they want to wear halter tops, hip hugger pants that you could see their butt crack, boys would wear pants so baggy that they couldn't walk without clutching their trousers, holes in embarassing places, not because they couldn't afford better, because they thought it was cool and they wanted to fight the establishment. There have always been dress codes, this is just an easier way to regulate it. It would be cheaper for the parents in the long run too.

It would be wores to go to school if I had to look like all the rest of the guys
swangmaster8 01/01/2005
Horrible thing. Everyone is different, and some people show they are different by dressing different. I don't agree with this at all.
ClassicTVFan47 11/15/2004
Show me a creatively-designed uniform, with bright colors and perhaps built in computers and a cool insignia, and then we shall talk. :)

Those early formative years of youth are supposedly a key factor in human development. Yet, it appears that it is still quite easy to disregard the idea of school uniforms if you never had to deal with the the consequences of being an impoverished student. When parents are financially strapped and can't aford the luxury of keeping their kids clothing up to snuff, the outcome is misery and embarassment for some students. A child's memories of high school shouldn't be composed of this sort of suffering. I recall how my fear of being targeted because of what I wore to school essentially paralyzed my self-confidence and any attempts at social interaction---with teachers or students. Achieving good grades was the least of my concerns, as my focus primarily dwelled on the avoidance of being noticed as one of those poor kids in shabby clothes. It may sound a bit excessive, but inexpensive school uniforms, partitioned desks in the classrooms (to trim the cheating and cut the chit chat), and a healthy lunch menu (sans the soda and snack junk) would better serve those students who currently view school as a tortuous experience.

There are so many problems facing schools today that one solution will not fix all the problems. When I was in school, I thought uniforms were a stupid idea. Now, as a parent, I've rethought it. It is impossible for some families to provide the kind of clothing their kids need to look right, but sometimes wearing the clothes isn't all it takes. For example, ifyou weigh 300 pounds, and are 13 years old, I don't care WHAT you wear, you will have problems. I see what my daughter goes through, and the idea of uniforms seems smart at times. She is conflicted - on one hand she wants to wear what other people are wearing, and 'fit in.' But on the other hand, she wants to wear wild, or just unique clothes, and funky shoes, because she likes them, but might get made fun of for being 'different.' I wore whatever I wanted in high school, and I'm sure people stared or whispered, but nobody ever said anything to me or started any trouble. But the difference is that I had so much self-confidence that nobody bothered, because I didn't even care. But I didn't have that when I was 10, nor does my daughter at 10. As far as the comment about changing the style of uniforms preventing you from using the same uniforms for your younger kids ? Well, styles change, and even with uniforms, you don't want kids to feel any more outdated and dorky than necessary, AND with uniforms, you may buy 3 outfits for a child, then cannot use them for another child, but so what ? 3 OUTFITS ? How many would you buy of normal outfits ? And who's to say that in a few years, your younger kid would even WANT to wear a 5-year old outfit ? Who knows ? Unless your school does the uniforms, you'll never really know the pros and cons, I guess.

So called educational experts say that wearing uniforms will create a level playing field where kids aren't judged, made fun of etc. HOW IS THAT GOOD? School should serve as a training ground for life and in real everyday life, the playing field is anything but level and judging and making fun of people is all around us. Children need to learn that and how to deal with it since it will be part of their lives until they die.
forgotten hero 01/14/2004
If we put the words Old Navy or Gap on the back of the uniforms then kids wouldn't complain about it so much. When will the school system learn that you can't solve peoples problems by making everyone look the same.
LadyShark4534 01/14/2004
I don't believe everyone should be forced to wear a set of clothes they don't want to. Creating school uniforms to make everybody equal is a similiar belief to communism.
CanadaSucks 01/14/2004
Not a real big deal. Solves some problems, but what's everyone complaining about? Nothing horrible or degrading about a decent uniform.
jgls 01/11/2004
this is not a panacea to solve the many problems we have in the schools, but what it will accomplish is getting rid of the attacks on students to rob them of their jackets or shoes. it will also eliminate the saggy pants look which irritates the hell out of me, because a belt or suspenders would definitely be a part of the uniform.
kamylienne 01/10/2004
(I apologize for re-listing a topic already posted under the Debate Corner) All the kids already wear the same things to school as it is, anyhow, why bother making it a unform? They just buy their uniform from Old Navy and Abercrombie and Fitch.
