Though the White Rose changed nothing in the course of the war, and went unnoticed even in Nazi Germany, its very existence makes it stand out, since of all tyrannies in history Nazi Germany was the one most enthusiastically accepted by its own people. The White Rose was a small group of college students in Munich with a favorite professor who guided them: they distributed leaflets opposing Hitler, were caught, tried and executed. And though they accomplished nothing toward the effort to bring down Nazism, they provided a sublime example of courage against impossible odds, facing down an implacable tyranny.
