From what I've read of this, it was more like a mobile riot than a rebellion per se. Since until their capture, they never fought more than a few badly armed or unarmed plantation holders, their courage is hard to gauge.

Nat Turner went into over more than 50 houses to kill people. He butchered three young children with a hatchet. Many innocent black people were blamed for Nat's crimes and killed by lynch mobs. Nat Turner was not heroic not in the least.
