Argumentum ad ignorantiam

Literally, "argument to ignorance." Easy to spot, this one has the form "A is not known to be true, therefore it is false." Example: "Evolution is not proven to be true, therefore it is false."

Argumentum ad ignorantiam 5

This is the argument to ignorance. This concept has a great religious significance and is the fallacious pit into which atheists and agnostics fall. Basically, it would go like this. "God is not known or proven to exist, therefore God does not exist." As the maker of this list states, this fallacy is easy to spot.

God cannot be scientifically proven, therefore, there is no God. Typical argument of atheists and people who chose to live immoral lives.

Maybe I am totally wrong about this (and I would encourage anyone to correct me), but I have always understood the burden of proof to be on the shoulders of one who claims an unyet proven existence of something. And so it was with great amusement that I was told by my more religious peers in high school that God existed because I could not prove that he didn't.

Heavily used by Joe McCarthy. There is nothing in the files to disprove his Communist connections. He's probably a Communist just like the rest of them.

Kind of sounds like I'm right, my mommy told me so, despite all the evidence you and the rest of the entire world might have , you can't prove it, wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! You can't prove your point, so you're wrong, so what if I can't prove my point?

Don't see much of this on RIA, do we? Whether the subject is evolution, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Islam, the Beatles, or some type of cuisine, somebody is sure to come up with a real gem.

Schoolchildren use this a lot. For example If you're eighteen and still don't have a girlfriend, you're probably gay. This is quite infantile logic.
